Dysfunctional SGI families

Sandra and Dick Gauer [the parents of SGI-USA National Youth Division leader Nathan Gauer] were top SGI leaders. They were always giving guidance about how to sustain healthy relationships. You guessed it, they divorced after 20 years. The rumors were flying and not one word of contrition from either one for citing themselves as perfect examples of matrimonial bliss thanks to the SGI teachings. Since there is no moral compass in the Soka Gakkai because of their reliance on expedient means and ends justifying the means, there is more adultery and abuse in the Soka Gakkai than in the general population.

Another reason for failed marriages in the Soka Gakkai is the incessant activities and the divisional system which forces husbands and wives apart. The kids too suffer tremendously and in my experience, SGI families are often dysfunctional. Many SGI children have clinical depression and a problem with addiction.

  1. Undisputable TRUTH.

A LOT of the "fortune babies" in SGI indeed suffer depression, maniac disease and drug addiction. This is a strong stereotype that prevails in SGI circles. I have personally witnessed it.

  3. I n the Gosho, "Two Kinds of Illnesses" Nichiren references the Lotus Sutra, telling us that there are *84,000 "Illnesses of the mind" --; they arise from *spiritual causes* and that only the True Buddha who preached the Lotus Sutra can cure them.

The spiritual causes refer to *slander of the Law*, which Nichiren has taught is the common cause all of us in the latter day, "without exception" have committed. Nichiren's teachings, for us in the latter age are based entirely on the highest teaching of the Eternal Buddha, Shakyamnui-- therefore it could be said that ONLY Nichiren;s teachings can cure these "illnesses of the mind"-- (* the number 84,000 is used to indicate a very large number and is not a specific reference)

I think that, bearing Nichiren's teachings in mind, we should not necessarily focus on how many family's are dysfunctional or their members *diagnosed* with mental illness in SGI or NST, but instead we should ask; "are the teachings and the practice taught in SGI & NST based on Nichiren's teachings?" If we don't ask this question and seek to answer it we are only attesting to the true teaching in the Lotus Sutra-- that indeed there are many forms of *illnesses of the mind* prevalent amongst the people of the latter age--

What is to be done to alleviate these sufferings ?

Perhaps noting the worsening of these illnesses by practitioners in SGI or NST is only useful so far as we can establish that the cause for this is following heretical;, slanderous provisional teachings-- and in so doing declare the True teaching -- *the excellent medicine* left for us by our parent, *good physician* Shakyamuni Buddha.

Return to Nichiren, and discard the rest!!
