Chanting hours for trite benefit or strong faith?

Nichiren teaches that faith in the Lotus Sutra is first and foremost. It is enough to chant until one feels happy, usually fifteen or twenty minutes. Of course, there are times when one might want or need to chant more, for example, the recent loss of a loved one, good friend, or during a serious illness. Finding a mate or the perfect job, is not a life and death situation. SGI has turned Nichiren's religion into a cult, a prosperity [and personality] cult. The incessant chanting of Daimoku makes one highly suggestible while a deep and abiding faith makes one strong and self assured. In fact, chanting for hours and hours for trite benefit is the opposite of a strong faith. Since the Law is supreme, one should expect fabulous and expeditious results. If one fails to gain benefit by doing the morning and evening practice, it is because one's faith is warped, not because one is not chanting enough Daimoku. The Lotus Sutra also teaches that one moment of faith and joy may be enough.

  1. My exbitch sgi wife and sgi ruined me. Spents 50 thousand to be able to see son. Took 4 years. I am disabled, was a little then. She thinks its funny. They think its funny that i have epilepsy bad enough to not drive now. My ex taunts me says i deserve to be alone. Turned my son against me. He says same thing. What kind of buddhist are they or sgi?

    1. So sorry. Please chant with sincere faith and the curses will always return to the originators. These SGI "Buddhas"certainly can be mean. Just cause we are ill doesn't mean we can't live to a ripe old age.

  6. anonymous... as nichiren say....being a votary of the lotus sutra in the latter age can be a bitter, yet unavoidable destiny.

whatever the circumstance, if one strives to practice with correct faith(same as nichirens), one will be protected. this does not mean that one will not experience hardship(change karma), but that at the end of the day they will be protected and eventually their sincere prayer will come to be. lying to people, like the sgi does is not respecting life. truth sometimes is harsh. chant NAMU MYOHO RENGE KYO and follow nichiren to the best of your ability......and it will work out.
