The arrogance of SGI YWD leader Vinessa Shaw

"A year ago from this month, (middle of the month- can't remember the exact date) I did my final "free month" of SGI when I had the displeasure of meeting the national YWD Leader Vinessa Shaw. The arrogance of SGI and these women who haughtily came from somewhere USA to espouse guidance to the young women of my town was the biggest eye opener of my entire experience with SGI. They were so disrespectful towards all of those who had volunteered to do "free work" on their behalf. They had no time to even make eye contact much less light conversation. I lost an entire weekend putting up with their shenanigans and that's when I decided to fully divorce myself from SGI. So I will be celebrating a full year since I left SGI. The greatest joy from such an unpleasurable experience came when I found out that 3 members, one you could call a fortune baby who had just given birth to a child and going through issues of her own had given SGI the boot." -- KR

  1. Nichiren's Buddhism is all about the Law not the person ,in my 52 years as a full time member I have seen every type of person pass through good bad and ugly. Yet only one thing matters to me ,to continue chanting NMRK no matter what or who.A lot of different types of people have tried to destroy my faith in Gohonzon they have all failed and suffered the consequences of slander.

    1. Same here, although I have been practicing for 23 years. Had I been swayed by the behavior of a less than perfect, annoying, etc, member I would have quit not only SGI but jobs and even my family. I have also seen people become unhappier the more they slander others.

    2. What about SGI which slanders the Original Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni and the Supreme Votary of the Lotus Sutra, Nichiren Daishonin?

  2. John, if you are an SGI member, you are not a Nichiren Buddhist. You are a practitioner of Ikedaism. It is SGI who defames the Sutra, not me.

  3. hi i am currently an sgi member but I have never formed a connection with Dr Daisaku Ideka. I only read the gosho in my 10 years of practice and followed the strategy of the lotus sutra. can you please suggest what should I read to start my nicherin practice , can I keep my gohonzon from sgi or does it have to be returned. I want to start so any guidance would be great. Thanks!

  4. Hi, please return it or respectively burn it while chanting Namu Myoho renge kyo and the Jiga-ge. I believe I answered your questions under your other comment. Regarding guidance here is what Nichiren says:

“Now , when the Eternal Buddha was revealed in the essential section of the Lotus Sutra, this world of endurance (Saha-world) became the Eternal Pure Land, indestructible even by the three calamities of conflagration, flooding, and strong winds, which are said to destroy the world. It transcends the four periods of cosmic change: the kalpa of construction, continuance, destruction and emptiness. Sakyamuni Buddha, the Lord-preacher of this pure land, has never died in the past, nor will He be born in the future. He exists forever throughout the past present and future. All those who receive His GUIDANCE are one with this Eternal Buddha.” — The True Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind

“Since Sakyamuni Buddha is eternal and all other Buddhas in the universe are his manifestations, then those great bodhisattvas converted by manifested Buddhas are also disciples of Lord Sakyamuni Buddha. If the “Life Span of the Buddha” chapter had not been expounded, it would be like the sky without the sun and moon, a country without a king, mountains and rivers without gems, or a man without a soul. nevertheless, seemingly knowledgeable men of such provisional schools of Buddhism as Ch’eng-kuan of the Hua-yen, Chia-hsiang of the San-lun, Tz’u-en of the Fa-hsiang, and Kobo of the shingon tried to extoltheir own canons by stating: “The Lord of the Flower Garland Sutra represents the reward-body (hojin) of the Buddha wheras that of the Lotus Sutra the accomodative body (ojin);” or “the Buddha in the sixteenth chapter of the Lotus is an Illusion; it is the great Sun Buddha who is enlightened.” clouds cover the moon and slanderers hide wise men. When people slander, ordinary yellow rocks appear to be of gold and slanderers seem to be wise. Scholars in this age of decay, blinded by slanderous words, do not see the value of a gold in the “Lifespan of the Buddha” chapter. Even among men of the Tendai school some are fooled into taking a yellow rock for gold. They should know that if Sakyamuni had not been the Eternal Buddha, there could not have been so many who received GUIDANCE from Him. ” — The Opening of the Eyes
