"How precious is your life" - Nichiren

You may be too ill to get out of bed, too dizzy to stand up and too nauseous to eat. You may be too weak and short of breath to walk to the bathroom and your pain too severe to be relieved by a shot of morphine. Chanting for two minutes may completely exhaust you. The main thing is to persevere with a faith like flowing water.

"Persist in your faith with the firm conviction that both Shakyamuni Buddha and the Lotus Sutra are free from any falsehood.

King Ajātashatru extended his life by forty years by embracing the Lotus Sutra. Ch’en Chen added fifteen years to his life. You also are a practitioner of the Lotus Sutra, and your faith is like the waxing moon or the rising tide. Be deeply convinced, then, that your illness cannot possibly persist, and that your life cannot fail to be extended! Take care of yourself, and do not burden your mind with grief.

If you are unwilling to make efforts to heal yourself, it will be very difficult to cure your illness. One day of life is more valuable than all the treasures of the major world system, so first you must muster sincere faith. This is the meaning of the passage in the seventh volume of the Lotus Sutra that states that burning a finger as an offering to the Buddha and the Lotus Sutra is better than donating all the treasures of the major world system. A single life is worth more than the major world system. You still have many years ahead of you, and moreover you have encountered the Lotus Sutra. If you live even one day longer, you can accumulate that much more benefit. How truly precious your life is!" -- Nichiren

  1. Maxwell told me you have a Kidney illness.
Mark, I very much treasure your life and care for you much. You do a lot of good with many of the awesome postings you publish. You know I have been studying Nutrrition for the past 45 years and so I want to EMPLORE YOU to check our Dr. Mark Greger's website: "nutritionfacts.org" and to read his best-selling book, "How Not to Die". I know you are a meat-eater and I am aware its addiction is as strong as that of cigarettes. Since becoming Vegan 45 years ago I have not been to a doctor for illness in 45 years! Even Dr. Neal Barnard, President of pcrm.org (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) always puts his patients immediately on a 100% vegan diet or he refuses to treat them. The Wold Health Organization has declared Meat and Dairy to be known Carcinogens. Your body cannot heal if we keep poisoning it with toxic substances. Please Mark it is killing me to learn you are ill and I shall always be praying for your well-being. I love you. - KASHO

    1. So I guess you are choosing to remain ignorant in deciding not to read this Ground Breaking Book and you choose to remain addicted to meat eating just as a Cigarette smoker refuses to give up cigarettes. And you have decided that Dr. Greger and Dr. Neal Barnard and all of the other doctors don't know what they're talking about. And you are choosing to NOT FOLLOW THE LOTUS SUTRA NOR NICHIREN. If you are not following Nichiren, what are you doing with this blog? If you do not follow Niciren, why would any Nichiren Buddhist choose to follow your blog? You are choosing to maintain your addiction to meat-eating rather than follow the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren is that it?

    2. Mark:

First, I am copying Greg Romero here because this also applies top him, (as well as Jerry).
Greg is always jumping on your bandwagon and approves and compliments all of your postings, mainly because
he is a "Follower" with no mind nor thoughts of his own.

Next, you claim to be a supporter of Nichiren and always criticize the SGI and Nichiren Shoshu for their lies and false teachings but then you allow Jerry, who is a Nichiren Shoshu ordained Priest to falsley criticize my Manifesto with
his false Nichiren Shoshu indoctrination in that he claims there are "no precepts in Nichiren's Buddhism", which is one of the 3 big lies espoused by the NST (the other two being "Nichiren is the True Buddha" and "the Dai Gohonzon is the true object of worship for all mankind".)
And of course, there was Greg Romero jumping in to compliment Jerry!
Then, when I reply back to Jerry's false criticisms of my manifesto with quotes from Nichiren, Shakyamuni and the Lotus Sutra everyone is completely silent and SHUT THE FUCK UP WITH NO RETORT NOR REPLY.!Next, you have have a posting on 3/30/19 entitled "Forgeries & Stupidity". Well let me tell you how Angry I am at having discovered nearly half of all SGI's published Gosho are FRAUDULENT! I attach hereto a copy
of "The Authentic Gosho List" which show that 81 out of the 172 Gosho published in the Major Writings of Nichiren are Fraudulent. Now I have to go out and buy all of the 7 volumes of Gosho published by Nichiren Shu in order to know the TRUTH about what Nichiren actually wrote.
Next, I understand that both of you has some sort of physical illness (the result of what you eat). I know how much Greg loves his bacon, but his heart really doesn't. You try to refute everything I've said about the supreme benefit of a vegan diet being optimum for humans and most recently when I recommended you read Dr. Greger's book, you commented, "I appreciate your concern. According to the latest double blind studies, your assertions are unproven. The longest lived man in the history of Great Britain ae exclusively oats and lamb. Nichiren was a strict vegetarian and he died at 61."I get it. You are so absolutely physically addicted to eating meat just as any other Drug Addict that you are willing to say anything to keep your addiction. So, when you get more sick than you are now, know that I shall be laughing at your obstinance and stupidity.

    3. Continued - Part 2:
All you need to do to learn that I know what the fuck I'm talking about is to watch the DVDs "Forks Over Knives"
and "Cowspiracy" and the You tube videos:

MEAT AND DAIRY CAUSE CANCER - Dr T. Colin Campbell's "The China Study" | LIVEKINDLY
But, you won't do that because you are an obstinate Drug addict who refuses to overcome his addiction and change his habits. And you call yourself a Nichiren Buddhist! Ha! Do you really have a Gohonzon. Try using it sometimes. It really does work. If you try real hard you can see your own life in it!So, next, we wore out the fact that there is no meat-eating in Buddhism because the foundation of Buddhism lies in COMPASSION, an emotion which is foreign to you. It implies Compassion for ALL living beings and those
animals you eat everyday are the Buddha's children. But you addiction allows you to ignore this edict and remain a hypocrite while continuing to falsly praise and follow Nichiren and the Lotus Sutra.
You don't get to have it both ways. the fact is that, so long as you continue to eat the Buddha's children (animals) everyday you are NOT following Buddhism and you shall NEVER attain enlightenment.
I would sooner have NO Friends at all than to associate with peaople who choose to eat meat because those people are both ignorant of nutrition and devoid of compassion.
You are just like President Ikeda, "All talk and NO action"!Goodbye. And know that everything you write about Nichiren and the Lotus Sutra is YOUR LIE BECAUSE YOU CHOOSE TO FOLLOW NEITHER.
And you need not ban me from your Blog because I do not plan to visit there anymore because I do not
consider you to be a Buddhist, nor does Shakyamuni

I credit this transformation to gaining Fortune in the guise of meeting the Health Practitioners and Doctors that would unlock and reveal a remedy.....and that is why you had some appeal Kasho.....I learned of you on this blog, and my receptors are always open to the possibilities that - when one is practicing correctly, maybe, just maybe, good fortune and advise is tapping you on the shoulder.

Read my Manifesto. Read chapter 14 "Peaceful Practices" of the Lotus Sutra in which they forbid meat-eating nor associating with those who raise animals for for. Those animals are the children of the Buddha and the Buddha clearly states that "Those who eat meat are no disciple of mine." So what we have here are a bunch of Hipocrates choosing to appease their addiction to meat rather than follow Nichiren, Shakyamuni & the Lotus Sutra!

Since then, I'll admit, I've had my share of burgers, ribs, steaks, etc....but, that prayer did set in motion the beginnings of compassion for the slaughter of animals for human consumption, and steadily over the years, my consumption, like most Americans I think, has declined - ageing has had something to do with it also......I live in Indian Country, Southern Ute.....the wealthiest Native Americans 'per capita.....my next door neighbor, a white boy, is the Game Warden for the tribe. He must restock the tribal lakes with fish, but in addition, he is responsible for presenting the tribal elders with 1) a whole Elk, butchered and wrapped, and 2) a yearly determined amount of Buffalo meat from their own herd - slaughtered and wrapped.....even if he must do the hunting by himself, he is responsible for preserving and procuring wild life foods as did their forebears. The Buddha died eating a rancid pork dish.

The Lotus Sutra DOES NOT exclude anyone from Buddhahood.

Even those who commit the Five Cardinal Offenses can attain Buddhahood through the Lotus Sutra:

five cardinal sins The five most serious offenses in Buddhism: (1) killing one’s father, (2) killing one’s mother, (3) killing an arhat, (4) injuring the Buddha, and (5) causing disunity in the Buddhist Order. Committing any of them causes one to fall into the Avichi hell, or the hell of incessant suffering.

    But not meat eaters?

    Nichiren teaches:

In addition to the three pronouncements of the Buddha in the “Treasure Tower” chapter of the Lotus Sutra, the “Devadatta” chapter contains two enlightening admonitions. [The first reveals that Devadatta will attain Buddhahood.] Devadatta was a man of incorrigible disbelief, of the type called icchantika, and yet it is predicted that he will in the future become a Buddha called the Thus Come One Heavenly King. The forty volumes of the Nirvana Sutra state that [all beings, including the icchantikas, possess the Buddha nature, but] the actual proof of that is found in this chapter of the Lotus Sutra. There are countless other persons such as the monk Sunakshatra or King Ajātashatru who have committed the five cardinal sins and slandered the Law, but Devadatta is cited as one example to represent all the countless others; he is the chief offender, and it is assumed that all lesser offenders will fare as he does. Thus it is revealed that all those who commit the five or the seven cardinal sins or who slander the Law or who are icchantikas inherently opposed to taking faith will become Buddhas like the Thus Come One Heavenly King. Poison turns into sweet dew, the finest of all flavors."

"...Those who possessed the capacity to gain enlightenment through either the provisional or true Mahayana sutras have long since disappeared. In this impure and evil age, Namu-myoho-renge-kyo of the “Life Span” chapter, the heart of the essential teaching, should be planted as the seeds of Buddhahood for the first time in the hearts of all those who commit the five cardinal sins and slander the correct teaching. This is what is indicated in the “Life Span” chapter where it states, “I will leave this good medicine here. You should take it and not worry that it will not cure you.”

  8. "Answer: The Meditation Sutra belongs to the provisional teachings, while the Lotus Sutra represents the true teaching. In no way are they equivalent. The reason is that when the Buddha appeared in the world, though he spent forty years and more preaching various doctrines, he had a great aversion to persons of the two vehicles, to evil persons, and to women, and said not a single word about the possibility of their attaining Buddhahood. In this one [Lotus] sutra, however, he stated that even those of the two vehicles, for whom the seeds of Buddhahood had rotted; Devadatta, who had committed three cardinal sins; and women, who are ordinarily hindered by the five obstacles, could all become Buddhas. This is clearly stated in the text of the sutra."

"On the other hand, if suddenly you should feel, for example, the approach of death, then even if you are eating fish or fowl, if you are able to read the sutra, you should do so, and likewise chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Needless to say, the same principle applies during your period of menstruation."

Nichiren and the Lotus Sutra teach that even animals will attain Enlightenment through the Lotus Sutra:

Salvation for the Suffering Animals by Graham Lamont

The power of the Lotus Sutra or Hokekyo to save all beings through our power of faith is proven by the attainment of Buddhahood dramatically demonstrated by the Dragon Girl in the “Chapter of Devadatta” 12 and referred to in the last quotation in the previous section: “They all saw the Dragon Girl .... attain True Enlightenment.” Although this event has several profound spiritual meanings for us, which I hope to explore in future issues, it can be noted here that Nichiren Shonin declares that this passage refers to “the Ten Realms which the Realm of the Beasts possesses.” (Kanjin honzon sho, STN, v. 1, 704) That is, even the Realm of Beasts possesses the Buddha Realm as well as the other Realms and, therefore, must inevitably attain Buddhahood. He also states:

“Though having the vile body of a dragon beast, born even as a woman and not even mature in years, she was scarcely eight years old. Though it was not at all expected, by the teaching and converting of Manjushri, within the sea between the “Dharma Teacher” and the “Devadatta” {Chapters] when He had scarcely preached the “Chapter of the Jewelled Stupa”, it was wondrous thing that she became a Buddha. If it were not for the power of the Hokekyo, how could it be thus? Therefore, Myoraku wrote, indeed, ‘The practice is shallow but the merit profound in order to reveal the Sutra’s power.’” (Kito sho, STN, v. 1, 673-674, citing the Hokke mongu ki (T.34.344c)

On a more immediate level Nichiren Shonin writes that the power of the faith of the Daimoku, “Namu Myoho renge kyo” extends from our realm into the Realm of Beasts. In the second year of Koan (1279) the Tonsured Layman of Nakaoki erected a sotoba or memorial offering plaque of wood (originally deriving from the “stupa” or reliquary mounds) for their deceased daughter on the thirteenth anniversary of her death; concerning this sotoba Nichiren comments:

    1. To realize and understand the original infinite cause of all phenomena which is stated in the Lotus Sutra , the Burton Watson translation is regardless and will not matter if you eat meat or not you will attain Enlightenment with this which is only shared between Buddhas, buddhahood does exist in hell just like all the other worlds to realize this original cause is the sole purpose of the Lotus Sutra the Lotus Sutra tells you the secret of this original cause in so many different ways and angles as it leaves it sitting in the center for you to understand that if you put all the Parables together you can attain enlightenment because every angle for enlightenment is absolutely covered in the Lotus Sutra where the secret of the original infinite cause of all phenomenal lies, or you can just chant the great title of the Lotus Sutra just the way nichiren did.. di=(great) moku =(title) for me chanting the dimoku came first reading the lotus was easier due to that fact... The essence of your existence is the Lotus Sutra, is the gohonzon you're pure existence is the original cause of all phenomena... Shakyamuni States I am always here preaching the law that's because the original infinite cause of all phenomena is always here he realized the Buddha thus he is the Buddha and is always here as well along with all buddahs...Kasho, the Lotus describes those of your natur as well does it not, no??

  9. “.... because on its face you displayed the Seven Characters “Namu Myoho renge kyo”, when the north wind blows the scaly tribe (fish) of the Southern Sea, meeting that wind, will leave the sufferings of the great sea and when the east wind comes the birds and deer of the western mountains, having had that wind touch their bodies, shall escape the Way of the Beasts and they shall be reborn in the Inner Cloister of Tushita. How much more the human beings who have a following joy (zuiki) for that sotoba, touching it to their hands and seeing it with their eyes! Think that it is like the moon’s reflection when the water is clear and the reverberation when they strike the drum that by the merit of that sotoba the departed parents shall also illuminate the Pure Land like the sun and moon of heaven and the person of filial nurture as well as his wife and children shall have a lifespan of a hundred and twenty years in the present world and in the after life shall go to the Pure Land of the Spiritual Mountain (ryozen jodo). Henceforth on subsequent sotobas you should display the Title (Daimoku) of the Hokekyo.” (Nakaoki nyudo goshosoku, STN, v. 2, 1718-1719)

This wonderful passage with its rather long sentences shows the power of the Daimoku to save all beings once the initial act of faith is made: after the memorial sotoba was set up in faith as an act of good for the departed (tsuizen), its power (which is a combination of the power of the Dharma, the power of the Eternal Buddha, and the power of the faith of the donor) spread to the donor’s family, rescuing his departed parents and his whole kindred. This, of course, is further proof of what was said above about one person’s faith in the Hokekyo benefitting not just one person but all those associated with that person. Clearly Nichiren was primarily concerned with the salvation of humankind, for he says, “How much more the human beings”. (Incidentally, the reference to “a lifespan of a hundred and twenty years” is not necessarily to be taken literally but is a traditional Buddhist expression of the longest life possible under the circumstances.)

However, the power of “Namu Myoho renge kyo” overflows into the world of the suffering beasts, who are being punished for their evil past deeds; through the power of the Daimoku written in faith they, too, are liberated and brought to the Inner Cloister of the Tushita Heaven. In conventional terms this Inner Cloister is the best part of Tushita Heaven where the next Buddha, the Great Bodhisattva Maitreya (Miroku In Japanese) dwells and preaches; it is, in reality, a Pure Land. However, Nichiren has explained in the Shugo kokka ron (STN, v. 1, 129-130) that when the Lotus Sutra speaks of such places of excellent rebirth, such as this Tushita Heaven, the Trayastrimsha (Toriten: Heaven of the Thirty Three), and the Western Pure Land of the Buddha Amida, it is giving names from the Previous Sutras to the one true Pure Land of the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni, the Pure Land of the Spiritual Mountain which is described in the Sixteenth Chapter of the Lotus Sutra. Thus by the power of “Namu Myoho renge kyo” and the faith and practice of those who receive and keep this quintessence of the supreme Hokekyo, even the suffering beasts will attain Buddhahood in the Eternal Pure Land.

  10. But not carnivores like lions and tigers and eagles? Hitler was a vegetarian. The Buddha ate meat.

Even plants, according to the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren, can obtain enlightenment... a thorough discourse on this to follow. Suffice it to say that according to the Lotus Sutra the distinction between sentience and insentience is blurred. The Gohonzon is a plant. The Gohonzon is the Eternal Buddha, not merely a representation. Nichiren teaches that the Gohonzon is the teacher of all Buddhas throughout the universe. Likewise, the Lotus Sutra, as taught by Nichiren, is itself the Buddha's Body. The constitution of the United States is paper and ink but millions have died protecting it.

Some people who claim to be strict vegetarians eat, for example, Jiffee peanut butter. Those tiny black things in the peanut butter are insect parts, a certain amount of insect matter in peanut butter is allowed by the Food and Drug Administration. Vegetarians kill thousands of insects (and birds) in their car daily or they kill worms and other critters while walking in the garden. We, as a rule, don't kill anything. The Buddha taught, as long as the meat was not killed, either by us or expressly for us, we could eat the meat offered to us. Me personally, I don't even kill ants or spiders, however, as a doctor, I kill round and flat worms and various other parasites in order to save human beings. A rabid animal is killed to protect our selves and our children.

Since the meat in the supermarkets and restaurants was not killed expressly for us, the Buddha taught it was ok to eat it.

I have given you all of the Buddhist Teachings but your strong addiction to meat-eating has you completely ignoring them at all costs.
