But is there anyone who has actually encountered the three obstacles and four devils? The statement “If one falls under their influence, one will be led into the paths of evil” indicates not only the three evil paths but also the worlds of human and heavenly beings, and in general, all of the nine worlds. Therefore, with the exception of the Lotus Sutra, all of the sutras—those of the Flower Garland, Āgama, Correct and Equal, and Wisdom periods, and the Nirvana and Mahāvairochana sutras—will lead people toward the paths of evil. Also, with the exception of the Tendai school, the adherents of the seven other schools are in reality wardens of hell who drive others toward the evil paths. Even in the Tendai SGI school are found those who profess faith in the Lotus Sutra, yet actually lead others toward the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings. They, too, are wardens of hell who cause people to fall into the evil paths."Mark Rogowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05176132114346404556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2070186063250309253.post-64668230251035530712016-08-03T02:46:49.826-05:002016-08-03T02:46:49.826-05:00sounds like steven made a good friend.

I appreciate his writing and meant to convey how much can be learned from it-- stating my perception of slander is not a declaration that I am free of it-- or that I am totally right on this or any call. I don't want to practice or study in a vacuum. Here on Eagle Peak I am assured of thoughtful feedback and compassionate criticism.

I am facing some extremely difficult circumstances now that may have caused me to doubt my practice 10 years ago-- but presently seem like actual proof that I am practicing more correctly than ever. Such a difficult to explain phenomena--I am sharing because at the heart of my prayers is the desire to correctly perceive and correctly uphold the Lotus Sutra.

What comes to my mind so often now is my complicity with SGI Boston's slander-- silence and apathy, mostly. It stemmed from my attitude that my own practice was all that mattered-- feeling relieved when I no longer gave SGI Boston the time of day. Not caring what they thought of me, or the rumors they spread, in retrospect meant that I forgot about the effects of these leader's behavior on other members, and this whole area of the country.

Anyway, thanks for posting Steve's writing. I agree that he makes good points about the Lotus Sutra. I will remember him with gratitude for what he took the time to share; will chant daimoku for his repose,

~KatieKatie Higginshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05688676386085212349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2070186063250309253.post-76730462955818203112016-08-02T20:27:13.325-05:002016-08-02T20:27:13.325-05:00Searle is deceased. Still, some of his points are true and valid regarding the SGI, if not the Lotus Sutra.Mark Rogowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05176132114346404556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2070186063250309253.post-54686916887129307352016-08-02T18:58:07.534-05:002016-08-02T18:58:07.534-05:00This is a very well written astute observation of ...This is a very well written astute observation of a confounding paradoxical experience -- . Steve has captured the essence of the proliferation and decline of a flawed organization. The question remains, how much damage has been done by discounting the Buddhism, by that I mean, The Lotus Sutra and Shakyamuni Buddha, and using the daimoku in the quest for whatever one desires?

So many times it is said that the non-Buddhist tenets of the SGI are harmless, close approximations of the *real* teachings, but it is not so often noted that this is the very worst thing one could do , or rather, Nichiren's warnings and admonitions are not taken as seriously as his declarations regarding the *wonderful Law* Myoho-renge-kyo. SGI senior ,leaders begin as evangelicals and wind up looking like zealots-- and hardly anyone notices that THIS is not the appearance, nature or manifest action of a Buddha-- all the while claiming they are, Buddha- hell, they ALL are Buddha-- until something goes wrong, or someone asks a question that probes too deep-- or a leader Buddha is uncomfortable in the presence of a big mouth member Buddha.

This writer foot notes with a disclaimer: he claims his scriptural references, which must be the basis for his practice re The Lotus Sutra-- venerated by Nichiren, NOT the writings of Nichiren himself.

One step above separating the daimoku apart from Buddhism, itself-- is separating the Lotus Sutra from Nichiren's teachings and practice. More Buddhism, but still slander.

SGI's *me too* off the racks pseudo Buddhism-- is all the more dangerous when it is gently critiqued and mildly negated. In my humble opinion...

~Katie

Katie Higginshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05688676386085212349noreply@blogger.com
