The SGI and the Nichiren Shoshu are all about making things up.

"Nichiren says Lotus Sutra but means DaiGohonzon."

"Nichiren says Lord Shakyamuni Buddha but means DaiGohonzon."

"Nichiren says Lord Shakyamuni Buddha but means Nichiren."

"Nichiren says all believers but means the SGI."

"Nichiren says Lotus Sutra but means Namu Myoho renge kyo."

"Nichiren says all believers but means the High Priest of Nichiren Shoshu."

"Nichiren says the DaiGohonzon..."(though he never mentions the DaiGohonzon)

"Nichiren says the High Priest of True Buddhism...."(though he never mentions the High Priest of True Buddhism).

"Nichiren says the Buddha of Kuon Kanjo..."(but never mentions Kuon Ganjo).

"Nichiren says Shakyamuni Buddha but means Buddha-nature."

"However, they [the third and most powerful of the Three Powerful Enemies] do not look like those referred to in the sutra:" -- Nichiren

"At the present time, the Soka Gakkai itself is the one and only group of united priests which receives and inherits the 'lifeblood of faith.'" -- Daisaku Ikeda, Seikyo Shinbun, 9/18/93

David Kasahara SGI vice general director wrote:

"The more we strictly follow the Law, including, in my mind, President Ikeda's guidance..."

Nichiren writes,

"However, they do not look like those referred to in the sutra: monks who wear robes and stay in tranquility. People do not suppose that they are revered by the people as though they were arhats with Six Superhuman Powers or, should I say that they are those who are more cunning and less likely to reveal their faults?"

It is very important to determine who are the cunning monks. Think carefully. Who could be more cunning than a monk who states, "I am not a monk, I am a layman." From the perspective of this age and time, we would have to conclude that it is the business suited lay vice presidents and President of the SGI who are these cunning monks. Those who are looked up to as living Buddhas or having Superhuman Powers ("He could read my thoughts.", "How could anyone but a living Buddha collect so many awards and honors?", "Who but Daisaku Ikeda could write three hundred books." -- discounting of course his dozens of ghost writers) - that is who is the most cunning of the cunning monks.

Nichiren goes on to reveal another way to determine who is in fact the third of the Three Powerful enemies. Here he uses the Zen monks as an example:

"Monks who study only the writings refer to those who
are concerned only with the scholastic aspects without
understanding the true meaning of the scriptures through
wisdom; and Zen monks who are concerned only with
formality refer to those who are concerned with the
conventions of meditation without firmly grasping the
fundamentals. This is the same as the meditation of
Brahmans, who will never gain complete freedom from
delusions and evil passions. T'ien-t'ai's statement that
some Zen monks concentrate only on meditation is an
understatement sypathetic to them. In actuality, they
lack both practice in meditation as well as wisdom to
understand the doctrine. Those who practice Zen consider
only the meditation important and pay little attention to
the study of doctrines. They interpretate sutras from the
viewpoint of meditation in such an absurd way as to say
that the eight-fold Evil Path and the Eight Winds make the
sixteen-feet tall Buddha, and the Five Elements of all
existences and the Three Poisons of greed, anger, and
stupidity make the Eight-fold Evil Path. They confuse the
six sensory organs with the Six superhuman Powers, or
confuste the basic elements of the material world (earth,
water, fire, and wind) with the Four Noble Truths. That such
interpretations of the sutras are the worst of all is beyond
question, an absurdity not worthy of discussion."

If you have spoken to the top leaders of SGI, you will know that they are not much different than the Zen monks, confusing the very basic concepts of Buddhism with meaningless but sometimes ornate rhetoric. They are also like Sammibo, a former disciple of Nichiren Daishonin who became arrogant thus distorting his teachings. If you haven't spoken to the top leaders, here are some examples.

"In the November 9, 1992 World Tribune (WT) p. 5, the late Richard Causton, former general director of the SGI-UK, stated,

"We must deeply understand that the heritage of the Universal Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo can only be transmitted through organizations joined in unity, based on faith in Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism and the principle of the oneness of master and disciple." (emphasis added). Mr. Causton also explains his reference to "the oneness of master and disciple" as follows: "All of us who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, which our ultimate master, Nichiren Daishonin, taught us, can develop the eyes of the Buddha; but it is President Ikeda, our master in life, who guides us through the rocks and shoals of this life, with pride and gratitude. President Ikeda has taught me everything. "The article also states: "Hence, the master gives his guidance based on his interpretations of the Gosho in contemporary terms and his experience of action, both for his own human revolution and for guiding the movement for kosen-rufu. We as disciples, must then set out to prove its validity for ourselves . .

Please note the focus on President Ikeda and not on the Eternal Shakyamuni, Namu myoho Renge kyo, the Lotus Sutra, nor the Daishonin .

"An editorial in the WT of November 16, 1992, p. 2, stated:

"One way [of making 'sincerity' real in our lives] is to constantly renew our determination to live with sincerity by putting President Ikeda's guidance into action every day . . . It's important to study Nichiren Daishonin's writings and the guidance of President Ikeda, but unless we put all these words into action, they are meaningless."

It is implied that President Ikeda's guidance is superior to the guidance of the Gohonzon, Buddha Shakyamuni. and Nichiren Daishonin.

"In the January 11, 1993 WT, p. 4, Mr. Ikeda stated:

"Since the Buddhist way of mentor and disciple is the ultimate way for humanity, it is impossible to grasp even the tiniest fragment of it if your efforts are only half-hearted. How faithfully did Mr. Toda follow and protect Mr. Makiguchi? And how faithfully did I follow and protect Mr. Toda? To a degree nearly unimaginable by people today. I could not hope to serve that great leader of Buddhism, Mr. Toda, without a determination to give up my own life if necessary. In that fierce determination we find the very essence of what it is to be human."

The Daishonin's master was the Eternal Shakyamuni and the Lotus Sutra. Again, again and again he stated to rely on the Law and not on the person.

"In the November 16, 1992 WT, p. 5, Mr. Ikeda stated:

"Those who think that the times when the SGI is facing terrible persecutions has nothing to do with themselves will receive no benefits. They have nothing to commend themselves; they have no faith. But those who fight with the conviction that they are personally being persecuted possess truly great faith. Those who can maintain their faith until the last moment of their lives -- even if they are thrown in jail because of their faith for 20 or 30 years -- are true Buddhists, true 'revolutionaries' directly linked to the Daishonin."

Is the SGI being persecuted for the sake of the Law or for their questionable social and political activities or merely admonished for their bastardization of the Lotus Sutra and teachings of Nichiren Daishonin?

In the September 12, 1994 WT, p. 5, Senior Vice General Director David Kasahara stated:

" . . . ', the more capable we become at being flexible in our awareness of what others need for their happiness."

The Law is President Ikeda's guidance according to the SGI. They chant Nam(u) Myoho renge kyo with their mouths but Nam(u) daisaku Ikeda and Namu Daisaku Ikeda's guidance with their hearts. Next, he will have his guidance inscribed on the Gohonzon.

In the May 3, 1996 WT, p. 10, Mr. Ikeda stated:

"Ultimately, Buddhism comes down to the person. I did not wait to place my trust in President Toda until I had learned about the Daishonin's teachings. Rather, I came to trust Buddhism because I first believed in the person, Josei Toda."

Rely on the person and not on the Law is the teaching of the Soka Gakkai. Is this not destroying the Law, the Lotus and Nirvana Sutras, and the writings of Nichiren?

In the SGI May study preparation lecture on Letter to Misawa by the head of the SGI study department, the jist of Greg Martin's lecture was that, through faith in the oneness of mentor and disciple, faith that the disciple is one with the Buddha, Daisaku Ikeda (specifically and our seniors in faith, generally), we can prevent the Devil of the Sixth Heaven from entering into our lives and organization. Don't drop "oneness" when entrusting yourself to Ikeda or a senior or even when discussing the mentor disciple relationship, he explained (obviously a very very important point because he made it several times).

Another "important" point he made, was not to succumb to the tantalizing temptation for power and authority [except in relation to the mentor of Daisaku Ikeda and your seniors in faith]. This too was another example of double speak.

Select a mentor (someone like Ikeda and your seniors) who has defeated the Devil of the Sixth Heaven . Substitute wisdom for faith (faith in the mentor and your seniors). About the organization he said, one reed can't stand alone which is double talk because one moment earlier he discussed self reliant faith and practice and in the next moment, reliance on SGI.

Greg Martin went on in his lecture on the Letter to Misawa to say that we can transform ourselves through reading and putting president Ikeda's guidance into practice but he never touched upon those enemies of the Lotus Sutra, such as the Shingon priests and their teachings, nor did he discuss the principle of not begrudging one's life for the Lotus Sutra, contrasting strong faith with the weak faith of the Nun Usabusa. He also talked very little about the Supreme Votary of the Lotus Sutra, Nichiren Daishonin and he did mention the Daimoku and teaching others but his conclusion was that the one vehicle to realize the widespread propagation of the Law (Kosen Rufu) is the teaching of mentor (Daisaku Ikeda) and disciple. The reality is, this important writng of Nichiren Daishonin has very little to say about anything that remotely resembles the SGI teachings on mentor and disciple.

In general the SGI maintains, like the zen school,

"The Lotus Sutra is a finger pointing to the moon
while the Zen School is the moon itself. After
grasping the moon there is no need for the finger
to point at it. Zen is the heart of the Buddha while
the Lotus Sutra is merely His words. Having finished
preaching all the sutras, including the Lotus, the Buddha
picked up a bunch of flowers and gave it to Kasyapa
because he alone understood what the Buddha
meant. As proof the Buddha entrusted him with His
kesa (vestment), which had been handed down through
twenty-eight patriarchs of Buddhism in India to six
patriarchs of Buddhism in China."

They assert either that the Lotus Sutra has lost its power or it is too difficult to understand without the instruction of Daisaku Ikeda.

As a matter of course, we do not spare our voices to protect the teachings of the Daishonin while the SGI does not spare it's voice slandering and distorting the sacred teachings. The truth will be disseminated despite the power, money and prestige of Daisaku Ikeda and the SGI. We are determined to follow in the footsteps of Shakyamuni Buddha, Nagarjuna, Vasubandu, Nan Yueh, Chang-an, Tientai, Miao-lo, Dengyo, Nichiren Daishonin, and Nichiju Shonin and admonish those who would seek to destroy the Sublime Dharma  of the Lotus Flower Sutra.

One need look no further than the SGI leaders and specifically Daisaku Ikeda as the third and most dangerous of the Three Powerful Enemies in this present age.

Scientific litter box analysis has shown...

Religious history of the Soka Gakkai before the split with Nichiren Shoshu

"Think of the example of an electric light. Assuming of course that the light bulb itself is not burned out, no bright light will shine forth from an electric light to which the electricity does not flow because of a blown fuse, no matter how many times one turns on the switch. Even though the light bulb itself works fine, without electricity, the light will not shine. Accordingly, **those who do not worship the Dai-Gohonzon of Fuji Taisekiji are slanderers."** Soka Gakkai Shakubuku Kyoten, p. 339

"The Dai-Gohonzon enshrined at the Head Temple Taisekiji is the basis of everything in our religion. The successive high priests of Nichiren Shoshu alone are qualified to copy the Dai-Gohonzon to make a Gohonzon, which each of us embraces. This is based upon the Buddhist principle of bunshin santai (dispersion of the entity)."  Daisaku Ikeda, Chicago Community Center on October 11, 1980, reported in the November 24, 1980, World Tribune, p. 15

"In this sect (Nichiren Shoshu), the Living Essence, Uninterrupted Light of the Law has been bestowed like the transferal of the water of the Law from one vessel to another upon each specifically chosen High Priest in the lineage until the present day. To the last, the True Buddha is Nichiren Daishonin, and **we must revere the inner enlightenment of the High Priests, which is only bestowed on and between High Priests, in the same way that we revere the Daishonin."** Daisaku Ikeda, May 3, 1979

" . . . the 'Treasure of the Priest' refers to the High Priests in theline of Nikko Shonin, who are the only ones who have received the transmission of the Living Essence of the Law until the present day.Furthermore, all of the Priests are the disciples of the High Priest. They are the House of the Law. Consequently, no matter what thecircumstances may be, we must hold the Priests in a place of importance." Daisaku Ikeda, February 28, 1978

"The 'Treasure of the Priest' refers to the 2nd High Priest of this sect, Nikko Shonin, and as the 3rd president has stated, also refers to the High Priests, the only persons who have received the Living Essence of the Law." Seikyo Shimbun, June 30, 1978

"The Treasure of the Priest begins with Nikko Shonin, who correctly acceded to the possession of the Living Essence of the Law of True Buddhism, continues with the successive generations of High Priests, and in a broader sense, includes all of the members of the Priesthood who are of the House of the High Priest of the Law. [Omission] Realising how vitally important the existence of the Treasure of the Priest is, and honouring the Priests with faith filled with respect, thanks and and a desire to repay the debt of gratitude which we owe them, it is essential that we march forward toward kosen rufu in a spirit of harmonious unity between the Priesthood and the laity." Daisaku Ikeda, "Daibyaku Renge," November 1979 issue, reprinted in October 1983 issue

"Any person who is not obedient to the High Priest, whatever the reason may be, is no longer a Priest or lay member of Nichiren Shoshu. This is because there is no error more fundamental than this." Daisaku Ikeda, November 24, 1981, predicting his excommunication a decade later "The foundation of Nichiren Shoshu is the Bestowal of the Living Essence of the Law upon the One and Only Person. The only correct path for both Priests and lay believers is to proceed in obedience to the High Priest because of that Face to Face Bestowal of the Living Essence of the Law." Daisaku Ikeda, Jan. 24, 1982

"Till the end, only the High Priest's instruction can be the basis for the doctrines of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism." Daisaku Ikeda, April 17, 1981

"The inheritance of the Living Essence of the Law is the origin of Nichiren Shoshu. With the Dai-Gohonzon as their source, the successive generations of High Priests, the only ones to whom this has been transferred, have continued in their Eternal Protection of the Law." Daisaku Ikeda, July 24, 1982

"Realising how vitally important the existence of the Treasure of the Priest is, and honouring the Priests with faith filled with respect, thanks and and a desire to repay the debt of gratitude which we owe them, it is essential that we march forward toward kosen rufu in a spirit of harmonious unity between the Priesthood and the laity.

"Today, it is in the faith of Nichiren Shoshu and the tradition of the gakkai that we revere the successive generations of High Priests as we do Nichiren Daishonin. If anyone so much as makes light of the High Priest, as it says in the Gosho, the sufferings of hell await that person without a doubt. Whatever may happen, I pledge that we will proceed towards kosen rufu exactly as the High Priest instructs, and construct a harmonious unity between Priesthood and laity." Gakkai President Hojo, November 26, 1980

"Oh, SGI has changed. It is much better, much improved".-- SGI Leader

"I can see that you have the SGI rhetoric down pat. You have to look further beyond what you think to be actual proof. The source of the river is where to look. SGI and NST have lied to and misdirected numerous amounts of people as to what the real reason for practicing Buddhism is.

It isn't about being perfect, or getting material benefits, or following the guidance of leaders, or paying for World Tribune's which teach one nothing about life. It is about following the Law of the Buddha and the true teachings of the Lotus Sutra in order to become Buddha's ourselves. Stephanie isn't being negative. She is being honest. The source of the river of Buddhism is the Buddha and the Lotus Sutra. It isn't about renegade priests who have disowned the Buddha's true teachings, or created a false Gohonzon insulting Nichiren Shonin's true faith, nor megalomaniacs like Ikeda who have distorted what Buddhism is altogether. Its about being on the correct ship to cross the sea of suffering.

You say "Oh, SGI has changed. It is much better, much improved". I say BS. Putting on another make up job may rearrange the face, but the heart is still black. The source of the river is still contaminated. Nothing has changed." SGI started to realize that they were losing members in great numbers and had to back off and start the pretense of being a gentler and kinder organization. Nothing has changed. Until you can see through the magician's tricks you will continue to be tricked.

Nichiren always spoke the truth about slanderers and ended up being the most hated man in Japan. But in the Buddha's eyes he truly led the way to the truth. If pointing out the errors of slanderers ways connotes negativity, then I am truly negative myself. At least when I die and the Buddhas' come to aid my life, I will be with the Buddha again and revered as one of the few on this planet who had the guts to stand up to the slanderers of true Buddhism. I'm in good company with my fellow brothers and sisters that seek the truth of the Buddha and the Lotus Sutra. " -- Stephanie Maltz

Actual SGI-USA membership

Remember when Soka Gakkai top leaders were boasting "three hundred thousand" [or more] American SGI members?

The following were 1996 and 1997 total paid and/or requested World Tribune circulation figures -- actual number of single issues published nearest to filing date:

1996 -- 38,430* WT 11/1/96, p. 2
1997 -- 24,500* WT 10/24/97, p. 2

This was the most accurate reflection of active and semi-active SGI members and in this one year alone, nearly 14,000 WT subscribers either left the Gakkai or become so disaffected that they no longer subscribed to its principal publication. Things were never as rosy in the Gakkai as their spinmeisters led us to believe. Can we believe anything they report?

* The numbers are actually smaller because many leaders and members receive more than one subscription [sometimes up to five], at the urging of their leaders.

They would be better off spending their time reforming the draconian and authoritarian SGI.

The Gakkai's media watchdog is JWatch, a large group of young SGI Japanese lawyers who watch the media and attempt to steer journalists/writers "in the right direction". They do not mention that they are affiliated with the SGI. They also "watch" subversive groups such as the Nichiren Shoshu. Nichiren Shu, Kempon Hokke, and Independents. Their stated aim is to right the wrongs of the media regarding articles that promote dicrimination against AIDS patients and homosexuals, those condoning child and spousal abuse, ultranationalism/fascism, anti religeous freedom, and last but not least, articles critical of the SGI.  Their true and ultimate mission is to garner sympathy for and stifling criticism of the SGI. They would be better off spending their time reforming the draconian and authoritarian SGI.

Any advice?

Question: Hey Mark, I traced you through your blog about SGI being a cult at markrogow.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-definitive-analysis-on-why-sgi-is.html. Well I have someone very close to me who is part of SGI, and has tried to recruit me a couple of times, I researched a lot and came to a conclusion that it seems like a cult and I don't want to join, as a matter of fact I would like to advice the person who tried to recruit me to leave as well, but as I am sure you already know, its hard to reason with her. Any advice?

Answer: Chant Namu Myoho renge kyo for her to became a Buddha and she may eventually awaken.

In my previous post I answered a similar question. The problem is, I don't know the details of your friend's relationship with the Soka Gakkai. How long is she chanting? What is her position in the organization? Does she buy into everything Daisaku Ikeda and her leaders teach? You may inquire into any unresolved problems your friend has or if you know what they are, you may highlight them and tell her there is a more effective way to resolve them, become Enlightened, and obtain Buddhahood. Unless you are chanting with a correct faith, it will be very difficult to influence her.

"Fortunately, we can speak the truth now" -- SGI leader

The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the Earth have spoken only the truth since time without beginning. You [SGI] lied then and anyone who believes you now is most foolish.

The Specific and General Transmission made simple

Nichiren taught the Specific Transmission as the transmission from the Original Buddha Shakyamuni to Bodhisattva Jogyo. Nichiren taught the General Transmission as the transmission from the Original Buddha Shakyamuni to the Bodhisattvas of the Earth.

The Specific Transmission does not refer to a transmission from Nichiren Daishonin to the Nichiren Shoshu priests, to Daisaku Ikeda, nor the Three Presidents. The General Transmission does not refer to the Nichiren Shoshu priests nor the three presidents transmitting the Law to their disciples and believers.

They fabricated their teachings on the transmission in order for the self serving agenda of money and power. They make the transmission appear other than what the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren taught.

Nichiren Daishonin' explanation of the transmission accords with the Lotus Sutra's. Nichiren Shoshu's and SGI's does not.

Tientai on Myoho renge kyo

"Myohorengekyo is the inner storehouse of the exceeding profundity of the original ground; ... it is what all tathagatas of the three time periods have obtained." Thus, when we chant Myohorengekyo, the Buddha of original enlightenment will appear within our minds. Our body and minds are like a storehouse, and the character myo, to the seal that opens it. It opens the secret innermost storehouse; this is termed myo (wonderful). It demonstrates the correct principles of true and provisional; therefore, it is termed ho (dharma). It indicates the original effect (obtained by the Buddha) in the distant past; for this, ren (lotus) is used as a metaphor. It encompasses (everything) in the perfect path of non-duality; this is illustrated by ge (blossom). The voice does the Buddha's work; this is termed kyo sutra." He also states, " The word myo praises the inconceivable Dharma. Moreover, myo indicates the ten realms, ten suchnesses and all provisional and true teachings." -- Tientai

Daisaku Ikeda puts Goebbels propaganda into practice

"Propaganda works best when those who are being manipulated are confident that they are acting on their own free will."

"Society members have overcome one obstacle after another and attained Supreme and Perfect Enlightenment in this very life." -- SGI leader

Which ones, those who were run over by snow plows, those whose skulls were crushed in accidents, those who were murdered, or those many leaders whose sons and daughters experienced untoward deaths? Certainly not my friends Nat Dames and Dewitt Johnson and certainly not Shin Yatomi, David Kasahara, Guy McCloskey, or Daisaku Ikeda. Events such as those that you claim (attaining Enlightenment in one's present form) must have documented dates and times according to Nichiren Daishonin and in this modern day, unretouched photographs. Toda looked like death warmed over for months before he died and you expect us to believe that he was bright and rosy the moment of his death and for many hours thereafter? I too have heard talk about cherry treees blooming out of season but where is the independent documentation? There is none. SGI leaders and members can not even cross a moat a few feet wide but they would have us believe that one can safely cross the great ocean of life and death with the SGI teachings. How absurd!

"Not me, it wasn't us. It was all their fault"

Nichiren Shoshu priest: It wasn't our fault that the SGI gave out Gohonzon to anyone who wanted one. It wasn't our responsibility to examine the faith of every person the SGI introduced.

Nichiren believer: You printed the hundreds of thousands of Gohonzons given out by the SGI and you only spent minutes with the hundreds of people who came to receive the Gohonzon. Do you think that Nichiren Daishonin never thoroughly interviewed every person to whom he bestowed Gohonzon?

SGI cult member talking point

" Why don't you return to the Soka Gakkai? The SGI has changed with the honinmyo [begin again from this moment] spirit." -- SGI cult member talking point

The principle of Honinmyo is not to be used like Catholic confession or repentance: Anything one does is ok so long as one confesses and recites the Hail Marys. It would be better that those responsible for the debacle that is SGI step down and refrain from teaching and spreading Ikedaism.
