Nichiren on the slander of mixing

"The learned authorities in the world today suppose that there is no harm in mixing extraneous practices with the practice of the Lotus Sutra, and I, Nichiren, was once of that opinion myself. But the passage from the sutra [that I have just quoted] does not permit such a view. Suppose that a woman who had been the consort of a great king and had become pregnant with his seed should then turn round and marry a man of common stature. In such a case, the seed of the king and the seed of the commoner would become mixed together, and as a result, the aid and assistance of heaven and the protection of the patron deities2 would be withdrawn, and the kingdom would face ruin. The child born from two such fathers would be neither a king nor a commoner, but someone who belongs not to the human realm.

This is one of the most important points in the Lotus Sutra. The doctrine of the sowing of the seed and its maturing and harvesting is the very heart and core of the Lotus Sutra. All the Buddhas of the three existences and the ten directions have invariably attained Buddhahood through the seeds represented by the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo. The words Namu Amida Butsu are not the seeds of Buddhahood, nor can the mantras or the five precepts act as such seeds. One must be perfectly clear about this point, because this is the fault referred to as being mixed."

They lie so effortlessly

"Meanwhile here's a fact: In it's 67 year history, not one Soka Gakkai member has been indicted or charged, let alone convicted of any act of violence against all those who claim to be its victims. Not one. Take what you need and leave the rest." -- SGI spinning dervish

Besides not being true, any real victims are dead, so they can make no claims. There is, at least one SGI mass murderer and two Japanese SGI serial killers that I know of.  One stabbed eight children to death at the Ikeda Elementary School and the two serial killers are a couple who killed elderly people after conning them into taking out life insurance policies in their name. There is the top Ireland Woman's Division Leader who was stabbed to death by her SGI husband.

An example of SGI cult "bull baiting"

"These hateful rantings were posted on the internet in March 2004 by someone who betrayed the family of Soka. As you read, you will see how angry and emotional this person is, thus disqualifying her opinion from reasonable consideration. She failed to become happy and blames Soka for her faults. How pitiful!" and "As you can see from the following screed, people go pitifully insane when they leave the family of Soka." -- SGI member

They will be crushed by the weight of their slander

There are very few honest seekers of the way among the top SGI senior leaders and many don’t really believe in the Daimoku and all the President Ikeda stuff anyway. They will never admit to it but there is a group of leaders who I will term “wink, wink” who, when they believe you are in on the joke [of the mentor-disciple thingie and the Gohonzon], wink, wink. What they believe in are the social causes propounded by the Soka Gakkai. Jeff Corwin is one example.

Most top non-salaried senior leaders get a rise out of their positions of power and influence among the members. It fills a need.

There are a few true believers like Monte Joffee who, in the end, on their deathbeds will be crushed by the weight of their slander and the realization of the emptiness of their beliefs.

The high salaried senior leaders are another thing entirely. They are con men, hucksters, and sycophants who ride the coattails of their boss to a big fat paycheck. Many probably started out as true believers, believing in the infallibility of the mentor and the “great mission” of the Soka Gakkai. Then, even after they came to realize the stark reality of Ikeda's foibles and the true nature of the SGI, their livelihoods had become so enmeshed in the SGI PR and marketing strategy for prosperity, world peace, Enlightenment, Buddhahood, and the corrupting power of power itself, that any pure faith they might have had, had been destroyed. Now they became just hypocrites and slanderers while before they were merely slanderers out of ignorance. Theirs is now a willful corruption of the Dharma.

The very worst of them all are the high paid study department chiefs who know the truth of the Daishonin’s teachings yet alter the Gosho and teach contrary to Nichiren. They do so, even though they know better, in order to support the wicked Soka Gakkai and its real agenda of multinational religious corporatism and, of course, for the sake of material treasure and their inflated paychecks. I can not criticize them more.

Question: Why not teach in accordance with Nichiren Daishonin, the end results would be similar?
Answer: Nichiren Daishonin’s teachings are absolutely incompatible with profiting for teaching the Dharma. They can only alter the teachings in order to profit for teaching the Dharma. They can only alter the teachings to promote contributions so vigorously. They can only alter the Dharma to teach such non-Nichiren Buddhist concepts as the Oneness of Mentor and Disciple rather than the Oneness of  Law and Disciple.

A warning about Patriarchs other than Shakyamuni and Nichiren

Nichiren cites the patriarchs of Japanese Tendai as examples of evil patriarchs and I cite Nichikan, Nikken, Nichinyo, Makiguchi, Toda and Ikeda. Jikaku Daishi (the third patriarch of Tendai in Japan), for example, became a disciple of Kobo Daishi and turned Japanese Tendai into a branch of Shingon. Likewise, Nichikan and Toda turned the Nichiren faith into a branch of Shingon and Nikken and Ikeda ran with it.

This is the 'country' of accepting, holding, believing and understanding.

"Our teacher said: Fascicle three of the Lotus Sutra reads, 'It is as though they came from a land where hunger prevails and at once encountered a great king's feast.' Chuan (fascicle) six reads, 'This my land is secure and at peace, constantly filled with gods and humans....My pure land is indestructible.' The intent of these passages from both chapters is that the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings are like a land where one must journey through rubble. To mistakenly think that such a place is one's own country or the capital city comes about because of delusion. Because the beings had all dwelt in such a country for forty-two years, they thought it was their original land. Our true country is the Lotus Sutra. Thus the chapter on 'Belief and Understanding' states, 'By chance he returned to his own country.' The place where one has received the seed of Buddhahood in the remotest past is variously called one's own country, the Pure Land, or the great king's feast. The mind-ground that receives the seed of Buddhahood is precisely the 'country' of accepting, holding, believing and understanding."This is the 'country' of accepting, holding, believing and understanding.

Prayers and requests for healing the sick

"In the Sutra it says, 'This good excellent medicine now I leave here. You should take and swallow it. Do not worry that you will not be cured.' It also says, 'This Sutra then is the Excellent medicine for the sick people of Jambudvipa. If there shall be sick people who are able to hear this Sutra, the sickness shall at once dissipate and they shall not die before they grow old.' In the Sublime Writings of Nichiren Shonin it says, 'Though one were to point at the earth and miss, though there were those who snare the empty sky, though the tide were not to come in, though the sun were to rise from the west, it cannot be that the prayers of the Practitioner of the Hokekyo ever fail."

"We don't worship President Ikeda"

The organisation is getting more and more rigid, autocratic and hierarchical

"Our beloved organisation for a long period of time, after the breakaway from the priesthood wrote a lot about this issue of democracy of faith. In the UK, observing the way our organisation operates, any idea of democracy of faith is at best a myth and mere words on paper. The organisation is getting more and more rigid, autocratic and hierarchical with just a top down imposition of edits. We have leaders many of whom see their positions as positions of power and being better in faith than others. In the UK unless you subscribe to Mr Ikeda as a mentor and urge members to focus on him instead of their lives you can never be a leader. In what way is democracy of faith practiced in your countries? In what way does the way our beloved organisation do things differently from the priesthood? How can we resolve these issues in such a way as not to destroy the SGI? Lets have a good, warm, and heartfelt discussion of these issues for the future benefit of the SGI." -- SGI UK member

It would be better to destroy the SGI or to leave. It is not so much the lack of democracy. It is the lie that SGI is democratic. Nichiren Lotus Sutra Buddhism is not democratic. Shakyamuni Buddha [Lotus Sutra] and Nichiren Daishonin are the leaders and we [their disciples] follow their teachings, direction, and example in order to obtain Buddhahood. SGI's biggest mistake is their false object of devotion, Daisaku Ikeda

The Golden Age of real Nichiren priests

"The Nichiren Sect in the Azuchi and Momoyama Periods:

The representatives of the Nichiren Sect had a debate with those of the Jodo Sect by permission of the then ruler Nobunaga Oda in 1579. The judge, who had previously been ordered secretly by the ruler to persecute the Nichiren debaters, announced that the delegates of the Nichiren Sect had been argued down. The Nichiren priests had to submit a written apology. Three of the debaters were beheaded. Hideyoshi Toyotomi was tolerant towards the Nichiren Sect, but punished a Nichiren priest who had refused to attend an intersectarian Buddhist ceremony."-- From The Saddharmapundarika and its Influence

Ignorant of the real teachings, they follow bad teachers

"Nichiren teaches....(paraphrased), "there are two main reasons people make mistakes in their Buddhist practice...they are ignorant of the real teachings, and they follow bad teachers." Greg Romero

"All the teachings other than the “one chapter and two halves” are Hinayana in nature and erroneous. Not only do they fail to lead to enlightenment, but also they lack the truth. Those who believe in them are meager in virtue, heavy with defilement, ignorant, poor, solitary, and like birds and beasts [that do not know their own parents]." - True Object of Worship

"The people of these schools who are ignorant of the teachings of the “Life Span” chapter are similarly like beasts. They do not understand towhom they are obligated. Therefore, Miao-lo states: “Among all the teachings of the Buddha’s lifetime, there is no place [other than the ‘Life Span’ chapter] where the true longevity of the Buddha is revealed. A person ought to know how old his father and mother are. If a son does not even know how old his father is, he will also be in doubt as to what lands his father presides over. Though he may be idly praised for his talent and ability, he cannot be counted as a son at all!” - Opening of the Eyes

"However, if one is speaking to persons who one knows have the capacity to become wise, then one should first instruct them in the Hinayana teachings, then instruct them in the provisional Mahayanateachings, and finally instruct them in the true Mahayana. But if speaking to those one knows to be ignorant persons of lesser capacity, then one should first instruct them in the true Mahayana teaching. In that way, whether they choose to believe in the teaching or to slander it, they will still receive the seeds of Buddhahood.- i.b.i.d

"In India after the Buddha’s passing, Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna was the one who truly understood the relationship between the Lotus Sutra and the other sutras, while in China the Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai Chih-chewas the first to grasp it correctly. Men like Shan-wu-wei of the True Word school, Ch’eng-kuan of the Flower Garland school, Chia-hsiang of the Three Treatises school, and Tz’u-en of the Dharma Characteristics schooleach publicly upheld the doctrines of the school they had established, but in their hearts they were all won over to the teachings of the T’ien-t’ai school. Yet their disciples were ignorant of this fact and hence developed erroneous opinions. How can they avoid being guilty p.209of slandering the correct teaching?" - Letter from Teradomsri

"But the situation in Japan today is much worse. For here the rulers appear to be supporters of the Buddhist teachings, but they assist the priests who are destroying Buddhism and persecute the practitioner of the correct teaching. As a result, ignorant people all fail to realize what is happening, and even wise persons, if they are no more than moderately wise, have difficulty grasping the situation. Even the lesser deities of heaven, I suspect, do not understand. For this reason, the confusion and depravity in Japan today are even greater than those in India or China in the past." - Repaying Debts of Gratitude

"Shakyamuni Buddha is the father, sovereign, and teacher of all the other Buddhas and all the gods, of the whole assembly of human and heavenly beings, and of all living beings. How could the heavenly gods and benevolent deities rejoice if the Buddha were killed? Today all the people of our country have proved to be enemies of Shakyamuni Buddha, but more than laymen or laywomen, it is the priests with perverse wisdom and hearts who are the Buddha’s worst enemies. There are two kinds of wisdom, correct and perverse. No matter how wise a person may appear, if his assertions are warped you should not listen to him. Nor should you follow priests merely because they are venerable or of high rank. But if a person has the wisdom to know the true meaning of the Lotus Sutra, no matter how lowly he may appear, pay respect to him and make offerings to him as though he were a living Thus Come One. Thus it is written in the sutra.6 That is why the Great Teacher Dengyō says that the men and women who believe in this sutra, even if they lack knowledge or violate the precepts, should be seated above priests who observe all two hundred and fifty precepts of the Hinayana teachings, and never be seated in a humble position, and that this is all the more true of the priests of this Mahayana sutra." - Letter to Niike

"...if they try to use the Lotus Sutra, their efforts will fail because, although the sutra itself is supreme, the practitioners are persons who hold distorted views." -Treatment of illness

"...Among the non-Buddhist leaders were many wise men and persons endowed with supernatural powers, but none of them was able to free himself from the sufferings of birth and death. Moreover, the people who gave allegiance to their teachings, whether faithful or not all ended by falling into the three evil paths."

"The evil winds of these three men have become the huge wind of the True Word leaders that blows throughout all of China and Japan. And if that is so, then the great gale that arose on the twelfth day of the fourth month in the eleventh year of Bun’ei (1274) must have been an adverse wind brought about by the Dharma Seal Kaga of the Amida Hall, one of the most learned priests of Tō-ji temple, when he was praying for rain. We must conclude that the evil teachings of Shan-wu-wei, Chin-kang-chih, and Pu-k’ung have been transmitted without the slightest alteration. What a strange coincidence indeed!" - On Repaying Debts of Gratitude

"The first part tells how the votaries of the Lotus Sutra must endure evils inflicted by the body, mouth, and mind of their opponents. This refers tonon-Buddhists and evil lay Buddhists. The next part that begins with ‘In that evil age’ deals with arrogant members of the Buddhist clergy. The third part that begins, ‘Or there will be forest-dwelling monks,’ deals with members of the clergy who [pretend to be sages and use their positions so that they can] act as leaders of all the other evil people.” And the same text goes on to say: “The section that begins, ‘Because in the midst of the great assembly,’ describes how these men will appeal to the government authorities, slandering the Law and its practitioners.”

The spurious writing, The True Aspect of All Phenomena

"Since time immemorial all people on the earth have been the Buddha Sakyamuni's beloved children. We have not realized the relationship, because we had been undutiful children. It is a unique relationship. As the moon reflects on calm water, the Buddha appears in our mind." -- Hokke Shuyo Sho

Yet, in the True Aspect of All Phenomena we read

"Therefore, the two Buddhas, Shakyamuni and Many Treasures, are Buddhas who are functions [of Myoho-renge-kyo]. It is Myoho-renge-kyo that is the true Buddha. This is what is described in the sutra as “the Thus Come One’s secret and his transcendental powers.” The “Thus Come One’s secret” refers to the entity of the Buddha’s three bodies, and it refers to the true Buddha. “His transcendental powers” refers to the functions of the three bodies, and it refers to provisional Buddhas. A common mortal is an entity of the three bodies, and a true Buddha. A Buddha is a function of the three bodies, and a provisional Buddha. In that case, though it is thought that Shakyamuni Buddha possesses the three virtues of sovereign, teacher, and parent for the sake of all of us living beings, that is not so. On the contrary, it is common mortals who endow him with the three virtues."

The Lotus Sutra* and all authentic Gosho assert that we are disciples of Shakyamuni while only the True Aspect of All Phenomena and the Ongi Kuden assert that we are the Masters of Shakyamuni Buddha.

A correct faith, according to Nichiren, depends on: Proper relationships with the Law; our relationship with the Gohonzon; Shakyamuni Buddha as our Teacher, Parent and Sovereign Master, not that we are Shakyamuni Buddha's teachers . Were we to follow the instructions in the Shoho Jisso Sho, that we are the teachers of Shakyamuni Buddha, we would be become puffed up with arrogance, as the SGI.

*With the exception of Chapter 1, understood as not yet having revealed the truth (of the one  Eternal Buddha)

SGI insults Nichiren by rejecting his teachings for those of Daisaku Ikeda.

"Insulting Nichiren is an offense even graver than those of Devadatta or Vimalamitra." -- Nichiren

SGI Don has wasted a whole lifetime in the Soka Gakkai

Don Gropp: "The SGI knows what the correct object of worship is, and I believe the clue to this puzzle is found in "the one great reason."

As far as "can't be proven," I'd say the Nikko - Nichiko lineage is the one thriving and growing today, just like it did in Nikko's area after the Daishonin died. The experiences and stories of millions and millions of diverse individuals worldwide testify to fulfilling "the one great reason." That's proof of fact."

Don hasn't had an original thought about Buddhism in more than 45 years. Interfaith and deprecating the Sutra and Shakyamuni Buddha certainly IS proof of actual fact: Proof of the Gakkai's slander of Myoho renge kyo, the one great reason. They link the one great reason with the advent of Makiguchi, Toda and Ikeda as explained in the Human Revolution rather than Shakyamuni Buddha's preaching of Myoho renge kyo as explained in the Gosho. They are very confused. Their experiences are those of usurpers and slanderers of the Law. Their stories are just that, stories.

Don: "SGI has the most diverse demographic population in history, and a slew of youth who are coming out of where-ever (beneath the earth?). The youth, especially, more than 30 years are very active tweetin,' textin,' facebookin;' you name it now, with i-pads, i-phones and whatever's next. They seem even more united and pure than the youth of the "old days."

Me: Islam and Christianity is far more diverse than SGI and the SGI top leaders are all old Japanese men. SGI is about as diverse as the Catholic College of Cardinals. Whatever the SGI youth are tweeting it is not Buddhism. If it is true that they are energized, they are energized about Ikedaism not the Lotus Sutra Buddhism of  Nichiren Daishonin.

Don: The following letter to a believer seems something of a warning about failing to understand "this one great reason." I think that is the primary requisite by Nichiren, passed on by Nikko, which the other schools deny, instead, devoting themselves to "eternal Shakyamuni."

Me: Certainly devoting one's self to Eternal Shakyamuni is more in line with the Lotus Sutra and writings of Nichiren than devoting one's self to Daisaku Ikeda. Who is Don kidding? He is kidding himself and every person stupid enough to follow him and the Soka Gakkai rather than the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren.

Don: I've often seen Nichiren Shu altars with statues of Shakyamuni placed in the middle, concealing the character for "Nichiren." In reality, in the other Nichiren schools, you can practice in just about any way you'd wish. If a ceremony happens the parishioners have priests.

Me: Sour grapes. No real Nichiren priest would sign on to SGI's perversion of Buddhism. Nichiren himself enshrined his Statue of Shakyamuni Buddha From the Sea and he approved of the statues fashioned by his disciples such as Toki Jonin, Shijo Kingo, and even his former teacher Dozenbo..

Don: I've recently heard a lecture that explained each of the characters, and where we see the character for 'Nichiren,' that is where we put our own names. To put a statue or any other obstruction there is probably not a good cause, especially since the Daishonin say So I'm not into covering or concealing one's true name; Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, _ _ _, but I see it quite frequently in the Fuji schools.

Me: Hehe, Don would have a statue or picture of Don or Ikeda in front of the Gohonzon would it not seem so tacky. Don is so confused. SGI is a Fuji school. His logic is so poor. We hear SGI parrot Nichiren that the Gohonzon exists only within the mortal flesh of those who chant the Daimoku, failing to acknowledge that the Gohonzon is covered in blood, bones, urine, and excrement but he would begrudge us a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha or Nichiren Daishonin.

Don: SGI teaches much about the multiple meanings of each of the bold characters of the invocation written down the center of the Gohonzon. "Nam corresponds to the paramita of happiness" is what Ikeda taught. He said Myoho corresponds to the paramita of true self, renge corresponds to the paramita of purity, and kyo corresponds to the paramita of eternity

Me: SGI are not much different than the Zenmen in Nichiren's day.. Nichiren writes:

"....The Zen men in the world today value only meditation [as the way to realize the truth] and have no familiarity with doctrinal teachings. In relying upon meditation alone, they interpret the sutras in their own way. They put together the eight errors and the eight winds, and talk about the Buddha as being sixteen feet in height. They lump together the five components and the three poisons, and call them the eight errors. They equate the six sense organs with the six transcendental powers, and the four elements with the four noble truths. To interpret the sutras in such an arbitrary manner is to be guilty of the greatest falsehood. Such nonsense is not even worth discussing.”

Don confuses the Four Virtues of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth with the Paramitas. SGI interprets the Sutra and Namu Myoho renge kyo in their own way based on the writings of Daisaku Ikeda. We interpret the Sutra as did Nichiren Daishonin.

Don: I'm beginning my 45th year, and when I read this a couple of years ago, I felt refreshed, learning an ideal meaning of Nam, happiness - first - of course. Why didn't I think of that before???

Anyway, to make a long story very much shorter, from the Gosho:

"As I have stated many times before, the scholars in the world today assert that they have studied the Buddhist doctrines and acquired wisdom. But their whole lifetime is wasted, passed in a dream, as it were, simply because they fail to understand 'this one great reason.' You should be absolutely clear on this point, absolutely clear! Take care, take care. - Nichiren Reply to Sadashige (WND-2,1086)

Me: "The Lotus Sutra describes itself as representing the one great reason for which the Buddhas make their appearance in the world because it is a scripture that contains these Three Great Secret Laws."

Lacking a clear mirror, Don can not see himself. He has wasted a whole lifetime in the Soka Gakkai learning and teaching Ikedaism rather than the Lotus Sutra.

Nichiren responds to Tommie Pass the Doobie

"He [Daisaku Ikeda] turned golden (I swear to God he did and it freaked me out)" -- SGI leader Thomas Pass the Doobie on the Chanting Grower's Group

"There are many such wild and absurd stories associated with his name. Such incidents hardly lend support to the assertion that his teachings accord with the will of the Buddha." -- Nichiren Daishonin [Repaying Debts of Gratitude]

"We see that the Lotus Sutra is none other than Shakyamuni Buddha himself" -- Nichiren

Question: It is very common for a person to act as a good friend. But is there any proof that the Law can be such a friend?
Answer: It is common enough for a person to act as such a friend. But in this latter age, no true friend is to be found, and thus there is ample proof that the Law can act as such a friend.

Great Concentration and Insight says: “At times following a friend, and at times following the sutra scrolls, one hears the one true teaching of enlightenment that has been described above.”

The meaning of this passage is that one should take the sutra scrolls as one’s good friend.

The Lotus Sutra states: “If when the Lotus Sutra is propagated throughout Jambudvīpa there are those who accept and uphold it, they should think to themselves: This is all due to the authority and supernatural power of Universal Worthy!”

This passage means that when ordinary people in this latter age put faith in the Lotus Sutra, they are relying upon the power of their goodfriend Universal Worthy.

The sutra also says: “If there are those who accept, uphold, read, and recite this Lotus Sutra, memorize it correctly, practice and transcribe it, you should know that such persons have seen Shakyamuni Buddha. It is as though they heard this sutra from the Buddha’s mouth. You should know that such persons have offered alms to Shakyamuni Buddha.”

Reading this passage, we can see that the Lotus Sutra is none other than Shakyamuni Buddha himself. For persons who do not have faith in the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha has passed into extinction. But for those who put faith in the sutra, although Shakyamuni Buddha may seem to have passed into extinction, he is still present in the world.

Again the sutra states: “If, after I [Many Treasures] have become a Buddha and entered extinction, in the lands in the ten directions there is any place where the Lotus Sutra is preached, then my funerary tower, in order that I may listen to the sutra, will come forth and appear in that spot to testify to the sutra.” This passage tells us that when we chant the name of the Lotus Sutra, the Thus Come One Many Treasures, because of this original vow he has taken, will invariably appear before us.

And the sutra further states: “If there should be those who wish me [Many Treasures] to show my body to the four kinds of believers, then let the various Buddhas who are emanations of that Buddha [Shakyamuni] and who are preaching the Law in the worlds in the ten directions all return and gather around that Buddha in a single spot.”

Shakyamuni, Many Treasures, and the various other Buddhas of the ten directions, the bodhisattva Universal Worthy and the others are our good friends. If we rely upon this understanding, then with the good karma we have accumulated from past existences we can fare even better than did the boy Good Treasures, Ever Wailing or Spotted Feet, and the rest. They encountered good friends of the provisional sutras, but we will encounter good friends of the true sutras. Hence, though they encountered merely bodhisattvas of the provisional sutras, we will be fortunate enough to encounter the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the true sutras.

The Nirvana Sutra says: “Rely on the Law and not upon persons. . . . Rely on wisdom and not on discriminative thinking.”

To rely on the Law means to rely on the constantly abiding Law of the Lotus and Nirvana sutras. Not relying on persons means not relying on persons who do not themselves rely on the Lotus and Nirvana sutras. Even though they may be Buddhas or bodhisattvas, if they are Buddhas and bodhisattvas who do not rely on the Lotus and Nirvana sutras, they cannot serve as good friends. And how much more is this so if they are merely scholars, translators of the sacred texts, or ordinary teachers!

To rely on wisdom means to rely on the Buddha. Not relying on discriminative thinking means that one does not rely on those who are on the level of near-perfect enlightenment or below.

Seeking the mentor is following the person rather than the Law

"When I'm thoroughly seeking my mentor, these are the times when I feel most human and these are the times I have access to my own heart." -- Monica Soto-Ouichi national YWD leader presenting Daisaku's Ikeda's lecture on Chapter 2 of the Lotus Sutra
