"I've since given up. Here's why: Every time I call the SGI-USA Denver, the volunteer who answers the phone either has no clue what I'm talking about when I ask about upcoming activities, does not speak clear discernible English, is hostile or combative, or just not there.
I've actually volunteered there, only to be scolded like a head trauma victim on proper ways to answer phones, how to hold beads while chanting, how to sit, how to fold papers, how to close doors (no kidding), everything to the most minute detail. Not just by one person, but by several. I've been approached by "senior" members who would start a conversation and then just suddenly turn and walk away as if you did something wrong or were just a piece of manure in their gaze.
When I've asked senior staffers for information, they refuse to connect me. When I ask why activities are not posted on the website, or if I could help to do so, no one responds after repeated attempts.. When I ask about starting a local chapter or group, no one responds. When I speak with group leaders or chapter leaders who say they will keep in touch, no one does.
Considering these factors, why would anyone want to get involved in a group that is supposed to care or practice Buddhism when the people representing it are petty? Buddha would not turn his back on interested people or be clueless or hostile when asked questions." -- Lamont C.
