Those in SGI and in the other Nichiren sects use the carrot and stick approach to control their members, pandering to the base instincts and desires of their members. The carrot is bestowing the title of priest or leader on the base desiring sycophants and the stick is refusing to bestow such a title. With the title comes the "benefit" of satisfying their base desires for power and "special knowledge" at the least, and money, lands, and comfort at the extreme. Nichiren teaches to follow the priest with enlightened wisdom. It is most safe to follow Nichiren Daishonin.
