The following is based on the January SGI lecture on Chapter 20 of the Lotus Sutra.
"Those who live in a calculating manner, on the other hand, disregarding the people and looking only to protect themselves, are something other than Buddhas. Such behavior is evil." -- Daisaku Ikeda
a short time later...
"...especially as leaders, we should never be the ones who slanders others." -- Daisaku Ikeda
and still later...
"spiritual leadership in the Gakkai is not bureaucratic, it is found in our own human revolution based on the spirit of mentor and disciple."
Therefore, it is based on the mentor's spirit of slander of others while forcefully maintaining that "we should never be the ones who slanders others."
