“One of the remarkable things that Nichiren did, in my opinion, was to fuse esoteric theory into actual practice in that he saw that the actions of his body in this world were capable of creating more merit than any visualization practices. That what some did in theory in visualization, Nichiren actually did in this life – he read the Lotus Sutra with his body, not just with mudras, and that living itself was a constant mudra. The persecutions he endured were the persecutions of great beings sent to test his resolve and create the circumstances where he could have the opportunity to give his life for the Lotus Sutra.
