Daisaku Ikeda is both messenger and message

"I was a general member of Soka Gakkai for 30 years; and have been pretty much independent for 8 years. I see the Gakkai as a business, a sales & marketing organization that sells religion. I think the closest thing in the United States would be the large mass marketed evangelical Christian groups; the so called ‘Televangelists.’ Of course, in the US, the Gakkai does not use television; they use ‘on the ground’ network marketing.

I used to suspect that Soka Gakkai was sort of the PTL Club of Japan; with Ikeda in the role of Baker. Or maybe the PTL Club was a wannabe Soka Gakkai of the USA? I do not necessarily mean that in a bad way. Had Bakker not been so greedy and hedonistic; less of an Elmer Gantry, he might have done some good. Maybe a closer parallel would be Pat Robertson’s 700 Club / CBN, the late Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority, and Ralph Reed’s Christian coalition, all rolled into one? The late Oral Roberts was an earlier Ikeda like figure in the USA. I think the SGI is far more successful. Ikeda probably has more influence in Japan, than all the televangelists combined have in the USA.

The Gakkai also goes a little further with the veneration of Ikeda, maybe a lot further. In western culture, it seems over the top, odd, or even creepy, to name a lot of things after a leader while he is still active and/or alive. If it were the Nichiren Center, the Makiguchi Hall, or the Toda Gate; or if Ikeda were retired, I doubt so many eyebrows would be raised. Maybe the difference is East Asian / Japanese culture? Perhaps it seems odd to others that Americans tend to wait to honor someone, by naming things after them, until they are retired or deceased? I really do not know. It seems like the way they plaster Ikeda’s face everywhere; shades of Mao, Saddam Hussein, or Kim Jong Il, would be creepy in any culture.

At any rate, at the present time, it appears that the Soka Gakkai exists to market Daisaku Ikeda as sort of the Mahavira — the Hero of the world; or the Lokanatha — the World Honored One, of the new global age. Their aim always was and still is to establish “The Third Civilization.” This was actually supposed to be achieved by now; I think the target date, prior to the split with Nichiren Shoshu, was May 3 2001.

Finally, Barbara makes some good points about applying the ‘cult’ word here. IMO, Soka Gakkai International is more like a wealthy, powerful multinational corporation, whose primary business is religion. They also have their hands in media, publishing, education, and politics. Again, that sounds a lot like Robertson and the 700 Club. One difference is SGI seems to put more emphasis on Ikeda than the Buddha or Nichiren. The 700 Club still puts Jesus in the center. Ikeda is not only the messenger, to a large extent, he is the message. I think the veneration of Ikeda is not only excessive; but also hurts them. It is embarrassing enough that I can't be part of it. Of course, they did not ask me." -- Robin Beck

Accepting their apology?

"It is only the icchantikas, or persons of incorrigible disbelief, those who slander the Law, and those who pretend to be foremost in observing the precepts who cannot be forgiven." -- Nichiren

Even were SGI to apologize and sincerely repent of their errors, I could never accept it. On the contrary, they not only show no contrition but boast that they are the only group of believers upholding the Nichiren faith. They persist in their erroneous doctrines and proclaim that that they are foremost in upholding the precepts through their piddling acts of charity.

How can changing Nichiren's Buddhism be "read in terms of Nichiren's Buddhism"

Nichiren stated very clearly that "Shakyamuni Buddha resides in the hearts of those with sincere faith".

April 17 WT (1998), speech by Daisaku Ikeda delivered March 13, 1998:

“In contrast, this Gosho passage states that Shakyamuni Buddha resides in the hearts of those with sincere faith. Read in terms of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism, “Shakyamuni’ here refers to the original Buddha, Nichiren Daishonin himself.” p. 12

"I've never heard of SGI's Bible [Holy Scripture] of Shakubuku" -- SGI leader

"The Daishonin's soul would never reside within a Gohonzon he inscribed but which is in the possession of those who commit the slander of turning their backs upon Fuji Taisekiji." -- Soka Gakkai Shakubuku Kyoten, p. 340

Because the Shakubuku Kyoten both supports the Nichiren Shoshu and denounces the Soka Gakkai's present actions as heresies, SGI members are deprived of the Manual of Forced Conversion.

The real Nichiren Transfer Documents researched by Robin Beck

Revised 5-3-2006

On the Events After Nichiren’s Passing

The “Shuso Gosenge Kiroku” {Record of the Passing of the Founder} exists in the original at Nishiyama Honmon-ji, a Nikko lineage temple said to be the Head Temple of the Honmon Shu. The Kiroku is a detailed record of Nichiren’s last days. It was recorded, signed, & sealed by Nikko. It also bears the co-signatures & seals of Nissho, Nichiro, and Nichiji. We know a lot of what is in there, but have no complete or definitive translation. We do not even have a full outline. I know it does include:

The “Rokuroso”{6 Senior Successors}.
Details of the funeral & procession at Ikegami
The “Go-yui-gon”{Nichiren’s Last Will & Testament
“If the steward Hakiri turns his back to the Law, my spirit will cease to reside in Minobu.” — Nichiren

I know the “Shuso Gosenge Kiroku” does not include:

The“Go-ibutsu-haibun-cho” {Distribution of the Mementos} kept at Ikegami.
The“Minobusan-shuban-cho” {Minobusan Guard Rotation} kept at Ikegami.

I do not know if the Shuso Gosenge Kiroku includes the story that Nichiren commissioned the then 14 year old Nichizo, who was Nichiro’s half brother, with the task of converting the emperor in Kyoto.

A related document, the “Hakasho Mamorubeki Bancho no Koto” {The Shift for Protecting His Mausoleum} also exists in the original at Nishiyama. Of it, Rev. Shoshin Kawabe of Nichiren Shoshu wrote:

“In the 1st month of the next year, Nikko Shonin and disciples of the Daishonin enacted “The Shift for Protecting His Mausoleum.” … This enactment was ordained based on the Daishonin’s last will. On the back of this document are the signatures of four of the Six Major Disciples: Nissho, Nichiro, Nikko and Nichiji. Due to circumstances, Niko and Nitcho could not attend both the Daishonin’s funeral and the conference in Kuon-ji Temple.”

Also: Hakiri Dono Goho {Report to Lord Hakiri}, Sep 1282, Nichiren’s last recorded Gosho, recorded by Nikko, kept at Ikegami.

“I eventually plan to return to Mt. Minobu, but since I am now ill, nothing is certain about what may happen to me at any given time and place. No words can ever describe the magnitude of your kind support over a period of nine years, when people all over the nation of Japan hated and persecuted me. Thus, wherever I may meet my demise, I would like to be buried in the valley of Minobu. ”

“No matter where I die, please erect my tombstone at Mt. Minobu, where I chanted the Lotus Sutra in peace for nine years. My heart will go on to stay on Mt. Minobu forever.”

There are also three ‘thought to be authentic’ letters that provide us with useful information about the succession and the schism.

Mimasaka-bo Gohenji witten by Nikko October 12 1284. Download file
Here is another excerpt from that letter, translated by Murano:

“There is a serious incident (in Kamakura)…. Our friends in Kamakura are investigated…. Here we are not troubled…. The tomb at Minobu is trampled by deer. It is too miserable to look at. I do not mean to say that I ignore the duty of the other Senior Disciples ……”

A letter dated February 19th, 1285 written by Hakiri Sanenaga to Nikko, the original of which is kept at Nishiyama Honmon-ji Temple

“I have heard that the Lotus Sutra has prospered in Kuon-ji Temple. It is great. I am glad about this. I feel that by your living there, the late Sage is iving there.”

Finally, there is a draft of an internal Nikko lineage document called “Fuji Isseki Monto Zonchi no Koto” {Things for followers of Fuji to know aka Guidelines for Believers of the Fuji School. This was started in 1309 by Jakusen-bo Nitcho (1262-1310); first CP of Omosu Seminary. He never finished it. Nikko added notations after Jakusen-bo died. IIRC, the manuscript, with Nikko’s annotations, survives.

Of this, Kawai Kazuo wrote:

“In “Fuji isseki monto zonchi no koto” (Things for followers of Fuji to know”, you can read a piece of story about the images of Sage Nichiren. This document … “was written by Nitcho, the first chief instructor of Omosu Seminary, under Nikko’s direction, in the second year of Enkyo (1309) but was not completed because of Nitcho’s death.

I don’t know if there is an English translation of the document or not, but it seems to be important for people who are interested in the early history of NST. The document shows us how Nikko and his followers understood Nichiren’s teachings without adornment added after ages. It tells us about the disciples, the writings of Nichiren which Nikko collected, honzons, the ordination platform etc. But this document will draw attentions with what was not written there. For example, it tells about the ordination platform but not about the two famous transfer documents. It tells about honzons but not about the Dai Gohonzon of the second year of Ko-an.

For your convenience here are translations of segments of “The Record of the Passing of the Founder”, as well as “The Shift for Protecting His Mausoleum.”

The Rokuroso {6 Senior Successors}:

“I hereby determine that the following six disciples: Renge Ajari Nichiji, Iyo-ko Nitcho, Sado-ko Niko, Byakuren Ajari Nikko, Daikoku Ajari Nichiro, Ben Ajari Nissho, in no order/at random , are my major disciples. Accordingly, I have selected them to carry out my matters into the future. Recorder, Nikko.“– Seiten, p.581)

Latest North Korea missile launch lands near Japan waters, alarms Tokyo

"The people of Japan are certain to encounter the calamity of war." -- Nichiren

"But this is a trifling matter compared to what is to come. Hereafter, I have no doubt that the officials and the countless common people ofJapan will without exception suffer a fate like that of heaps of dry grass towhich a torch has been set, or like huge mountains crumbling and valleys being filled up, for our country will be attacked by enemies from abroad.

''The passages of scripture I have quoted indicate that, if the rulers, heeding the slanders of evil monks or the vicious talk of others, should inflict punishment on persons of wisdom, then warfare will immediately break out, great winds will blow, and attackers will appear from foreign lands. In the second month of the ninth year of Bun’ei (1272), fighting did in fact break out between two factions of the ruling Hōjō family;73 in the fourth month of the eleventh year of Bun’ei, there were violent winds;74and in the tenth month of the same year, the Mongol forces attackedJapan. Has not all of this come about because of the treatment that has been given to me, Nichiren? This is exactly what I have been predicting from times past. Can anyone be in doubt about the matter?''

I, Nichiren, am the only one in the whole country of Japan who understands why these things will happen. But if I speak out, I will be treated as King Chou of the Yin dynasty treated Pi Kan, tearing open his chest; as King Chieh of the Hsia dynasty treated Kuan Lung-feng, cutting off his head; or as King Dammira treated the Venerable Āryasimha, beheading him. I will be banished like the priest Chu Tao-sheng, or branded on the face like the Tripitaka Master Fa-tao.

In the Lotus Sutra, however, it is written, “We care nothing for our bodies or lives but are anxious only for the unsurpassed way.” And the Nirvana Sutra warns, “[It is like a royal envoy who] would rather, even though it costs him his life, in the end conceal none of the words of his ruler.”

If in this present existence I am so fearful for my life that I fail tospeak out, then in what future existence will I ever attain Buddhahood? Or in what future existence will I ever be able to bring salvation to my parents and my teacher? With thoughts such as these uppermost in my mind, I decided that I must begin to speak out. And, just as I had expected, I was ousted, I was vilified, I was attacked, and I suffered wounds. Finally, on the twelfth day of the fifth month in the first year of the Kōchō era (1261), the year with the cyclical sign kanoto-tori, having incurred the wrath of the authorities, I was banished to Ito in the province of Izu. Eventually, on the twenty-second day of the second month in the third year of Kōchō, cyclical sign mizunoto-i, I was pardoned and allowed to return.

After that, I became more determined than ever to attain enlightenment and continued to speak out. Accordingly, the difficulties I encountered became increasingly severe, like great waves that rise up in a gale. I experienced with my own body the kind of attacks with sticks and staves that Bodhisattva Never Disparaging suffered in ancient times. It would seem that even the persecutions suffered by the monkRealization of Virtue in the latter age after the passing of the Buddha Joy Increasing could not compare to my trials. Nowhere in all the sixty-six provinces and the two offshore islands of Japan, not for a day, not for an hour, could I find a place to rest in safety.

Even sages who persevere in their practice as earnestly as did Rāhulain ancient times, strictly observing all the two hundred and fifty precepts, or men who are as wise as Pūrna, speak evil of Nichiren when they encounter him. Even worthies who are as honest and upright as the court officials Wei Cheng112 and Fujiwara no Yoshifusa,113 when they see Nichiren, forsake reason and treat him unjustly.

How much more so is this the case with the ordinary people of the day! They behave like dogs who have seen a monkey, or hunters in pursuit of a deer. Throughout the whole of Japan, there is not a single person who says, “Perhaps this man has some reason for his behavior.”

But that is only to be expected. For whenever I come upon a person who recites the Nembutsu, I tell him that those who believe in theNembutsu will fall into the hell of incessant suffering. Whenever I come upon a person who honors the True Word teachings, I tell him that True Word is an evil p.728doctrine that will destroy the nation. And to the ruler of the nation, who honors the Zen school, I declare that Zen is the invention of the heavenly devil.

Since I willingly bring these troubles upon myself, when others vilify me, I do not rebuke them. Even if I wanted to rebuke them, there are too many of them. And even when they strike me, I feel no pain, for I have been prepared for their blows from the very beginning.

And so I went about with ever increasing vigor and ever less concern for my safety, trying to persuade others to change their ways. As a result, several hundred Zen priests, several thousand Nembutsu believers, and even more True Word teachers went to the magistrate or the men of powerful families, or to their wives or their widows who were lay nuns, and filled their ears with endless slanders concerning me.

Finally, all were convinced that I was the gravest offender in the entire nation, for it was said that in my capacity as a priest I was saying prayers and spells for the destruction of Japan, and that I had reported that the late lay priests of Saimyō-ji and Gokuraku-ji had fallen into thehell of incessant suffering. Those widows who were lay nuns insisted that investigation was unnecessary; rather, I should have my head cut off at once, and my disciples should likewise be beheaded or exiled to distant lands or placed in confinement. So infuriated were they that their demands for punishment were immediately carried out.

On the night of the twelfth day of the ninth month in the eighth year of Bun’ei (1271), cyclical sign kanoto-hitsuji, I was to have been beheaded at Tatsunokuchi in the province of Sagami. But for some reason the execution was postponed, and that night I was taken to a place called Echi. On the night of the thirteenth day, people made a great uproar, saying I had been pardoned. But, again for reasons that are unclear, I was ordered into exile in the province of Sado.

While people speculated from one day to the next if I would be beheaded, I passed four years114 on Sado. Then on the fourteenth day of the second month in the eleventh year of Bun’ei, cyclical sign kinoe-inu, I was pardoned. On the twenty-sixth day of the third month of the same year, I returned to Kamakura, and on the eighth day of the fourth month I met with Hei no Saemon-no-jō. I reported on various matters and informed him that the Mongols would certainly invade Japan within that year. Then on the twelfth day of the fifth month, I left Kamakura and came to this mountain where I am now living.

All these things I have done solely to repay the debt I owe to my parents, the debt I owe to my teacher, the debt I owe to the three treasures of Buddhism, and the debt I owe to my country. For their sake I have been willing to destroy my body and to give up my life, though as it turns out, I have not been put to death after all.

If a worthy man makes three attempts to warn the rulers of the nation and they still refuse to heed his advice, then he should retire to a mountain forest. This has been the custom from ages past, and I have accordingly followed it.

I am quite certain that the merit I have acquired through my efforts is recognized by everyone from the three treasures on down to Brahmā,Shakra, and the gods of the sun and moon. Through this merit I will surely lead to enlightenment my parents and my teacher, the late Dōzen-bō.

“Because there are disputes in Buddhism, there arise disputes in the secular world. Mount Hiei has lost its calmness and a lot of troubles have been occurring in Kyoto.” (The Way To Argue Buddhist Doctrines)
How prophetic. Today when there is no calm on Mt. Minobu and Mt. Fuji, how much worse are the troubles in Tokyo, Washington, Moscow, Tel Aviv, Islamabad, Bangkok, and Damascus. Nichiren attributed his situation to the Buddhist sects going against the Lotus Sutra and abandoning Shakyamuni Buddha. The situation today with the Soka Gakkai and the Nichiren Shoshu is much worse, these sects having abandoned the Essential Teachings of the Lotus Sutra and Eternal Shakyamuni Buddha of the Juryo Chapter of the Lotus Sutra. Nichiren goes on to say,
“The Nembutsu school goes against the Lotus Sutra and follows the three Pure Land sutras, so they look upon Amida Buddha as their premier object of devotion and look down on Shakyamuni Buddha. The True Word priests regard Mahavairochana as the supreme Buddha, so they look down on Shakyamuni Buddha. As for precepts, Mahayana and Hinayana are different but both regard the Thus Come One Shakyamuni as the most important. Other Buddhas only give testimony to his words. Various schools have differences but they should look upon Shakyamuni. Only worms born of the lion’s body feed on the lion. Non-Buddhist teachings cannot defeat Buddhist teachings, but disputes from within will destroy Buddhism. This is the dying words of the Buddha. In Buddhism they believe in Hinayana and lose Mahayana, and they believe in provisional Mahayana teachings and lose true Mahayana teachings.”
The worms of the Fuji School (SGI and NST) feed on the Bodhisattvas of the Earth and Nichiren Daishonin. They bore into the Gohonzon, Lotus Sutra and Gosho, eradicating Buddha Shakyamuni of the Original Doctrine and destroying the principles within. They further confuse the people by asserting their superiority over the Hokke sects and deprecating the sincere disciples and believers of the Nichiren Shu and the Kempon Hokke.
The very worst offender in the entire world is the Soka Gakkai. As Nichiren states in the Pure and Far reaching Voice, “What is superior it takes to be inferior, and what is inferior it takes to be superior. That is the reason why now, when its prayers are being used in an attempt to ward off the Mongol invaders, such prayers are on the contrary about to bring the invaders down upon us.” The SGI is the reason the world is in such poor shape. Just as vibrations from a slanderous mind will cause the head to split into seven pieces, the vibrations of slanderous minds of the Ten Million Soka Gakkai members is causing the world to be disordered and to split into seven pieces.
Instead of adorning the superior teachings with value creationism and human revolution, they replace the Lotus Sutra with these inferior teachings and replace Shakyamuni Buddha with Daisaku Ikeda.
Nichiren states,
“But, leaving aside for the moment the question of which is superior and which inferior, I can say that, far from bringing you deliverance, the practice of these teachings will lead to rebirth in the evil paths. (A Sage and an Unenlightened Man).
As far as the slanderous Nichikan Gohonzon, the most perverted doctrine in the history of Buddhism, Nichiren states:
“Nevertheless, the schools of Buddhism other than Tendai have gone astray concerning the true object of devotion. The Dharma Analysis Treasury, Establishment of Truth, and Precepts schools take as their object of devotion the Shakyamuni Buddha who eliminated illusions and attained the way by practicing thirty-four kinds of spiritual purification. This is comparable to a situation in which the heir apparent of the supreme ruler of a state mistakenly believes himself to be the son of a commoner. The four schools of Flower Garland, True Word, Three Treatises, and Dharma Characteristics are all Mahayana schools of Buddhism. Among them the Dharma Characteristics and Three Treatises schools honor a Buddha who is comparable to the Buddha of the superior manifested body. This is like the heir of the supreme ruler supposing that his father was a member of the warrior class. The Flower Garland and True Word schools look down upon Shakyamuni Buddha and declare the Buddha Vairochana and the Buddha Mahavairochana to be their respective objects of devotion. This is like the heir looking down upon his own father, the supreme ruler, and paying honor to one who is of obscure origin simply because that person pretends to be the sovereign who abides by the principles of righteousness. The Pure Land school considers itself to be most closely related to the Buddha Amida, who is an emanation of Shakyamuni, and abandons Shakyamuni himself who is the lord of teachings. The Zen school behaves like a person of low birth who makes much of his small achievements and despises his father and mother. Thus the Zen school looks down upon both the Buddha and the sutras. All of these schools are misled concerning the true object of devotion. They are like the people who lived in the age before the Three Sovereigns of ancient China and did not know who their own fathers were. In that respect, the people of that time were no different from birds and beasts.” (Opening of the Eyes)
As far as Nichiren Buddhist ceremonies, in the SGI, those of the founding fathers, Shakyamuni Buddha and Nichiren Daishonin are all but completely ignored while on May 3rd, for example, all praise is given to the Three Presidents of the Soka Gakkai. At their large meetings instead of singing songs in praise of the Lotus Sutra and Shakyamuni Buddha they sing songs in praise of Daisaku Ikeda. To make matters worse, the SGI political party Komeito is supported by the LDP rulers of Japan. Nichiren states:
“The great evil doctrine of these ceremonies over the years steadily made its way to the Kanto region, where it was embodied in the superintendents or attendant priests of various temples who repeatedly performed these ceremonies. The performers of these ceremonies from the beginning could not distinguish between correct and erroneous teachings, between superior and inferior doctrines, but assumed that it was sufficient merely to revere the three treasures. So, without a thought, they employed these ceremonies. And now not only the provinces of Kanto but the chief priests and superintendents of Mount Hiei, To-ji, and Onjo- ji have all come under the jurisdiction of the Kanto authorities, so that, as a result, the latter are in the position of supporting these ceremonies.”
Hasn’t the great evil of these ceremonies spread to all corners of the world, every district meeting singing Forever Sensei and Sensei For You? Is there any wonder why their prayers for peace are unanswered. to the contrary, war rages ever more intensely in every corner of the world.
The SGI which embraces the expedient teachings whereby the ends of lying and withholding justify the means, make a mockery of the essential teachings, the Great Direct Way to Buddhahood. Daisaku Ikeda, for example, never once mentions in his peace proposals, Namu Myoho renge kyo or Buddha Shakyamuni. Another example are the many meetings and SGI ceremonies where Nichiren, the Lotus Sutra or Shakyamuni Buddha aren’t even mentioned once while “SGI” and “Daisaku Ikeda” are proclaimed dozens of times. Nichiren states in the Entity of the Mystic Law:
“T’ien-t’ai says, “Even successors of the Buddha of the provisional teachings do not know people who have received instruction from the Buddha of the theoretical teaching, and people taught by that Buddha do not know people who have received instruction from the Buddha of the essential teaching. ”The Great Teacher Dengyo explains, “This is a direct way but it is not the great direct way. “He also says, “Because they have not yet understood the great direct way to enlightenment.” The point being made in these passages is clear.
The bodhisattvas of the teachings preached before the Lotus Sutra or of the theoretical teaching have, in a certain sense, eradicated delusion and gained understanding of truth. Nevertheless, in the light of the essential teaching, they have gained only a temporary cutting off of delusion, not the kind that extends beyond a certain dimension. Therefore, it is said that they have in fact not yet cut off delusion.
Thus, although it is said that the bodhisattvas had already gained entrance [to enlightenment] through the various sutras, the term “gained entrance” is simply applied here in a temporary manner as a means of disparaging the achievement of the people of the two vehicles. Therefore, even the great bodhisattvas of the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings and the theoretical teaching arrive at the realization of the lotus of the Buddha only when they are exposed to the essential teaching, and achieve a true cutting off of delusion only when they hear the teachings of the “Life Span” chapter.”
In Teaching Practice and Proof, Nichiren teaches us,
“How naive are those who cling only to the stump of one sutra without knowing which are superior and which inferior among all the sutras! Even if one cannot [read all the sutras and] discern this for oneself, there can be no mistaking that the Lotus Sutra is the only sutra whose truth was attested to by Shakyamuni Buddha, Many Treasures, and the Buddhas who are Shakyamuni’s emanations.
Should one nonetheless view the Lotus Sutra as false and misread the Buddha’s words “I have not yet revealed the truth” as “I have already revealed the truth,” one’s distorted vision would be inferior even to that of cattle or sheep. Exactly what is meant by the passage in the “Teacher of the Law” chapter: “Among the sutras I have preached, now preach, and will preach, this Lotus Sutra is the most difficult to believe and the most difficult to understand” ? Does the Immeasurable Meanings Sutra not make it clear that Shakyamuni taught the practice of Buddhist austerities spanning myriads of kalpas before declaring, “In these more than forty years, I have not yet revealed the truth” ? These passages are nothing less than the Buddha’s own statements of the relative superiority of the various sutras he expounded during his some fifty years of teaching. The relative superiority of the sutras corresponds to whether or not they lead to Buddhahood.”
The teachings of Value Creationism and Human Revolution do not lead to Buddhahood yet the SGI teaches these instead of the Lotus Sutra. They base their assertions on treatises and not the Lotus Sutra, not even the treatises of the Daishonin but rather those of Nichikan, Toda and Ikeda. They disgard the Lotus Sutra as too profund to be understood or not applicable to the people of the Latter day. They disgard the Lotus Sutra which leads to Buddhahood in one thousand out of one thousand instances while embracing the teachings of the Three Presidents that never once in seventy five years as practiced by millions and millions of SGI members has led to Buddahood, even in one instance.
Nichiren states in Those Initially Aspiring to the Way:
“Therefore, when people declare that their own sutra surpasses the Lotus Sutra, or that their own school is superior to the Lotus school, they are like persons of inferior rank calling someone of high rank a commoner, or retainers whose families have for generations been in the service of a certain lord turning against him and declaring him to be their servant. How can they escape grave retribution?”
Daisaku Ikeda’s wisdom is as brilliant as the sun and moon, and his virtue is extolled far and wide, yet he is confused as to which teachings are shallow or deep, inferior or superior, and has led millions of people astray. This is the reason that he has suffered personal and specific retribution.
Not reflecting nor learning a thing, he flaunts his knowledge and acts as if he were wise, though he is an ordinary person, who regards the superior teachings as inferior and the inferior teachings as superior. He regards the powerless teachings of the Soka Gakkai as those leading to enlightenment, and declares teachings inappropriate for the people’s capacity to be appropriate for them. Thus he believes that the teaching of Value Creation and Human Revolution is superior and the Lotus Sutra is inferior and that the former suits the people’s capacity but the latter teachings do not. (excerpted and paraphrased from the One Eyed Turtle and the Floating Log)
Nichiren states:
“Thus they place such pronouncements (Value Creation, Human revolution, peace proposals) on the same level as the Lotus Sutra, considering the two to be of equal authority; or they regard these teachings as superior to the Lotus Sutra; or they reason that though their teacher’s pronouncements are inferior they are well suited to the capacity of the people.” (The Teaching that Accords with the Buddha’s Mind)
“Remember this about the theoretical and essential teachings of the Lotus Sutra: Which is shallow and which profound, which superior and which inferior, which lenient and which severe, and which subordinate and which primary must be judged in accordance with the time and the people’s capacity.” (On Establishing the Four Bodhisattvas as the Object of Worship.”
The SGI teachings are based on the gentle methods of the Theoretical teachings rather than the strict and superior Essential teachings. It has brought confusion to the Buddhist order.
Because they hate us, the ignorant people choose the SGI which is inferior and detest the superior. As Nichiren says, “It is as though one were to assert that a dog is braver than lion, or that the stars appear brighter than the sun.”(One Eyed Turtle) We are considered men of erroneous views although we practice according to the teachings. Despite all this, we feel as Nichiren, “tears spring to my (our) eyes and joy fills my (our) entire body.” (ibid. One Eyed Turtle)
Nichiren states:
“As more Buddhist sutras were brought to China, it became apparent that some were superior in content or more profound than others. They belonged to different categories such as Hinayana and Mahayana, exoteric and esoteric, provisional and true. To illustrate, all stones are invariably inferior to gold, but gold itself is divided into several grades. No gold found in the human world can match the gold mined from the Jambu River.1 But the gold from the Jambu River is in turn far less valuable than the gold stored in the Brahma heaven. In the same way, all the Buddhist sutras are like gold, but some are finer and more profound than others.” (The Supremacy of the Law)
Toda was confused, believing the fools gold of the Taisekaji teachings were superior to the twenty-four carat gold of the Lotus Sutra Nichiren's teachings. Spreading such vile teachings as these, the SGI members and leaders accumulate slander upon slander which, by now, has now grown into a Mount Sumeru of slander. Is there any doubt that the world, far from being a better place for the spread of the SGI teachings, has become a boiling cauldron of death and despair? There is no doubt!
How can this most distressing of situations be remedied?
Nichiren states:
“I decided that I would not heed the claims of these eight or ten schools, but would do as the Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai did and let the sutras themselves be my sole teacher, in this way determining which of the various teachings of the Buddha’s lifetime are superior and which are inferior.”
To remedy this situation and repay our debts of gratitude to Shakyamuni Buddha, the Lotus Sutra, our parents, brothers, wives, and children and to all the people of Jambudvipa, we can do exactly as Nichiren did. We can investigate thoroughly the teachings of the various Nichiren sects matching them with the Lotus Sutra and the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin:
“Among the various sutras, there must be one that is the monarch of all. Yet the ten schools and seven schools I have mentioned all argue with one another over which of the sutras it is and can reach no consensus. It is as though seven men or ten men were all trying to be the monarch of a single nation, thus keeping the populace in constant turmoil.
Wondering how to resolve this dilemma, I made a vow. I decided that I would not heed the claims of these eight or ten schools, but would do as the Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai did and let the sutras themselves be my sole teacher, in this way determining which of the various teachings of the Buddha’s lifetime are superior and which are inferior. With this in mind, I began to read through all the sutras.
In a scripture called the Nirvana Sutra, the Buddha says, “Rely on the Law and not upon persons.” Relying on the Law here means relying on the various sutras. Not relying upon persons means not relying on persons other than the Buddha, such as the bodhisattvas Universal Worthy and Manjushri or the various Buddhist teachers I have enumerated earlier.” (Repaying Debts of Gratitude)
and
Lastly, coming to the just and correct conclusion that it is the Hokke sect that is superior and the teachings of the Lotus Sutra alone that leads to Buddhahood, we can spread these teachings far and wide, repudiating the wrongs of the Soka Gakkai, the Nichiren Shoshu, provisional Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. The world will become peaceful, calm, and secure.
When, “The Buddha is looked upon as the sovereign and the gods as his ministers; the relations between superior and inferior are correctly ordered in accordance with the rules of propriety, and therefore the nation should be well governed.” (King Rinda) Then, we will experience a new world, a land of Eternal Quiescent Light.

"Though the people of Japan think highly of the Lotus Sutra, because of their animosity toward me, the priest Nichiren, they refuse to chantNam-myoho-renge-kyo. But when invaders from the great kingdom of the Mongols strike once or twice again as they did at Iki and Tsushima, attacking and killing the men and taking the women prisoner; when they battle their way as far as the capital Kyoto and the city of Kamakura, seizing the sovereign himself along with his high ministers and hundred officials, flinging them in the dirt before their oxen and horses, and violently abusing them—how then will the people of Japan be able tokeep from chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo?

In the past, when I was struck several times in the face with the fifth scroll of the Lotus Sutra,17 I felt no resentment at it. In fact, I was actually delighted. For to be attacked in the manner described in the“Never Disparaging” chapter, to suffer assault as predicted in the“Encouraging Devotion” chapter, is indeed a high and precious honor.

But how vexing such attacks must be to Brahmā, Shakra, the gods of the sun and moon, and the four heavenly kings, who inscribed an oath in the presence of the Buddha that they would not permit evil men to strike the votary of the Lotus Sutra! It would be no small matter if those who slander me were to fail to incur punishment from the heavenly deities in their present existence. Not only will those deities [who fail to punish them] be destroyed throughout past, present, and future, but even now the Buddhas are surely taking an account of their actions. And when that happens, it will be no fault of Nichiren’s. Rather, by siding with those priests who slander the correct teaching, they are summoning great disaster upon themselves."

"I, Nichiren, am the most loyal subject in all of Japan. I do not believe that there has ever been, nor ever will be, anyone who can equal me in this respect. The reason I say so is as follows: When the great earthquake struck during the Shōka era (1257–1259) and the huge comet appeared in the first year of Bun’ei (1264), a number of wise persons, both Buddhist and non-Buddhist, performed divinations, but they could neither determine the causes of these disasters nor foretell what was to come. As for me, I secluded myself in a scripture library, and after pondering the matters based on the Buddhist p.1008teachings, I concluded that, because the people revere the priests of provisional Mahayana and Hinayanateachings, such as True Word, Zen, Nembutsu, and Precepts, and make light of the Lotus Sutra, the heavenly kings Brahmā and Shakra would rebuke them by ordering a country in the west to attack Japan. I submitted a written warning to this effect to the lay priest of Saimyō-ji, now deceased. People of all religions scoffed at it and dismissed it, but nine years later, in the fifth year of Bun’ei, an official declaration arrived from the great Mongol empire announcing its intention to attack Japan. Because my prediction had thus come true, the Nembutsu priests, True Word teachers, and others resented me and plotted against my life."

''Among all the diseases, the Buddha worried that the five cardinal sins, incorrigible disbelief, and slander of the Law were especially grave ones. Without a single exception, the people of Japan today are afflicted with the most serious of all illnesses, the grave illness of major slander. I refer to the followers of the Zen, Nembutsu, and Precepts schools, and tothe True Word teachers. Because their illness is so serious, neither do they recognize it in themselves, nor are others aware of it. And because this illness worsens, warriors from throughout the four seas will attack at any moment, and the ruler, his ministers, and the common people will all sink into the sea. To see this before one’s very eyes is indeed a painful thing.''

''All the people in Japan, both wise and foolish, from the sovereign on down to the common people, say that the priest Nichiren is no match for the scholars, teachers, great teachers, and eminent priests of old. I waited for the right time to dispel their distrust of me. The time finally came when a great earthquake occurred in the Shōka era, followed by the appearance of a huge comet in the Bun’ei era.3 Observing these, I made this prediction: “Our country will suffer two terrible disasters: internal strife and foreign invasion. The former will take place in Kamakura in the form of internecine strife among the descendants of theacting administrator.4 The latter may come from any direction, but that from the west5 would be the most violent. This latter will occur solely because all the Buddhist schools in Japan are incorrect, and Brahmā andShakra will therefore command other countries to attack us. So long as the country refuses to heed me, it will certainly be defeated, even if it has a hundred, a thousand, or even ten thousand generals as brave asMasakado, Sumitomo, Sadatō, Toshihito, or Tamura. If these words of mine prove false, then the people are free to believe in the distorted views of the True Word, Nembutsu, and other schools.” This is the prediction that I have made known far and wide.''

"I don't expect much but I do expect to get what I came for. I don't know what a cult is I can't claim to understand the finer points of philosophy. They say they are a peace organization. Other than some guady self promotion I don't see anything. There isn't any social or political leadership. I know that it counts how people feel but it almost seems that if I sent a dollar Green Peace or the NRA I'd done more for peace. It's emarrassing when anybody talks about how great we are unless we're a sports team or a teenage rock band. There is such a structured program it may as well all came from one person. It's almost as if you can't say anything but what they want you to say. And if you do the responses are canned phrases, or a sympathetic nod. If some one can't talk to someone they disagree with except to avoid any real discussion at any level. What does dialog mean? I know peace means world wide what I say. What do they really say? If you stand with them you can have any flavor sunshine you want."

Better just to leave sleeping dogs lie

"I suspect that, with the SGI's continual process of re-inventing itself, we represent way more potential trouble for them than we're worth. After all, they already still count the members who left in their membership statistics, unless those members demand in writing that their personal information be removed, and even if they say they've done that, who's to say they really did??

Those of us, especially us old-timers, have experiences that today's SGI would rather forget. Look how everybody forgot all about former SGI-USA General Director George M. Williams after Ikeda kicked him to the curb - his name was stricken from all publications, he wasn't even mentioned by name in the New Human Revolution even in a passage featuring him. When Mr. Williams passed away in Dec. 2012, there was no mention at all in any SGI source. No memorial service. NOTHING.

You can't find any references to former leaders anywhere in any SGI publication. The only recurring name is Ikeda's. The fact that the Soka Gakkai has consistently had such monster attrition rates may well have played into the decision to write up the Soka Gakkai's history as a "novelization" rather than a history; the only real names in there are Toda's, Makiguchi's, and dead priests'. Also the decision to disguise and conceal identities and events by changing details, splitting one person's details between two or more characters, and combining aspects of several people into a single character. With people quitting right and left, this would have been a necessary development, because if it had been written as a
history, people would have been asking, "Hey! What happened to all these leaders we're reading about??" Like we did with that Makiguchi disciple former General Director of the Soka Gakkai, Shuhei Yajima, who nobody hears about any more O_O

Given that SGI continues to tweak its image and doctrines, perhaps we represent too much trouble. SGI is well rid of us, because WE remember the rank intolerance of SGI, which is now trying to pull the wool over outsiders' eyes with its "interfaith" nonsense. The intolerance and bigotry of SGI are still there - if there's any doubt, just glance at "Soka Spirit" (the "We hate Nichiren Shoshu" dept.) and you'll see. The existence of Soka Spirit completely contradicts SGI's own charter but SGI doesn't seem to see any problem with that. We would point that out. If SGI members were to somehow accomplish the heroic feat of luring us back to a meeting, would we like what we saw there, or would we cause trouble by asking too many questions and pointing out the utter lack of integrity in rewriting all the organization's doctrines, tenets, and priorities, since SGI has been progressively transforming into the Ikeda Cult?

No, they probably don't make any effort to seek us out. Around a million members have left SGI in the US alone. Shouldn't be too hard to track a few of them down. But the leaders know there's no point. We left for good reasons. That's why we never went back. They can delude themselves that everybody who ever tries SGI will be happier in SGI, they can tell each other that as much as they like, they can believe it, but considering that they've lost about 30 times as many members as they now have, probably best to just let those sleeping dogs lie." -- BlancheFromage

Mark can you email me? After years of thinking I was alone in my practice after disconnecting from the SGI I've finally found some like-minded people...I'd like your input on some questions regarding the gohonzon.

Money you can make back, your wasted time is gone forever -- Mudpie

"The daimoku they were chanting was fine. The equipment they used is interior... It wasn't their chanting that was the problem. It was the audio. They most likely used a camera that has a built in microphone. Those kinds of cameras have a bad reputation for for audio."

That's strange, that's exactly like the SGI claimed world membership, now just over half of what it was back in '88.

It's the teaching they've been using, it's interior too, the drop in numbers and the quaility of this "lecture" / Q&A tells me they've been using cheap, poor quailty understanding and guidance materials...

SGI has a bad reputation too but for not actually doing anything humanistic, being the change they want to see, funding any kind of relief aid or humanitarian projects or even being actively involoved. Words, words, words, all audio no action.

Perhaps the most chilling part of this video is where the big pitch is made to get people to the "study" meetings because they are so vulnerable.

They just sit at home chanting and getting benefits (how selfish), not doing their bit for SGI recuitment and profits - opps sorry, I meant 'kosen-rufu' (really, really selfish) and because if that they will be so vulnerable....hmm to what? Ah, vulnerable to spending quality time with their families, friends, being good neighbours, doing well at work etc. etc.

Vulnerable to not getting the message and getting with the SGI program.

Do they need an indoctrination, sorry 'study' meetings to study? No, they only need the Gosho and the Lotus Sutra.

The SGI needs them to be at those meetings though. Mr Harada's bonus is riding in it. SGI needs it's members and potential new business, not to see empty chairs and it needs to get it's manipulative materials into it's duped volunteer base, to keep them duped.

The only thing that's vulnerable is SGI and the profit and the wages of it's hired hands and wealthy board.

It's so sad to see people honestly believing that at 88 years old, having not been seen since 2013 and not now giving any 'Sensei videos', apparently Daiseku Ikeda is writing "so much" that the translation committee can't keep up.

It's even more sad to see them putting that across to others and duping them too.

At least they've come clean on the Dai Gohonzon though.

Yeah, finally Harada said the priests made a whole bunch of stuff up, it's not in the Gosho and it would have held back global expansion (which is funny given that they have been running hard in the opposite direction and contracting), so they got rid of it. (It was hitting profits having people buy the rivals product, when SGI doesn't get a cut, doesn't control the stock and is no linger part of the franchise)

Hmmm...so it's not in the Gosho.. so it's never been in the Gosho...so for almost 70 years, the combined three presidents, who are touted as understanding this stuff so well and who are supposed to have such a deep knowledge of the Gosho, didn't realise it wasn't in the Gosho and it was all made up. Or if they did, they just thought they'd go along with it and not rock the boat.

It's a wonder that this and other duped SGI members don't put 2 and 2 together and get 4.

I guess when you've been conned into giving your every last cent to support a corrupt organisation, you don't have any pennies left that can finally drop. It's really, really sad.

It may be their choices and karma but it still don't make that exploitation right. But then fools and their money are easily parted. Money you can make back, your wasted time is gone forever. Brrrr. Chilling.

More analysis of the SGI

Cheap uses for lack of accountability abound, but there is only one explanation that accords with Nichiren's teachings based on the Lotus Sutra. SGI is based on the arbitrary opinions of those who completely disregarded Nichiren and consequently, discarded both Shakyamuni and the Lotus Sutra. Their minds are so warped and twisted for having made these causes, that they cannot tell right from wrong, truth from lie, good from evil. SGI USA leaders have resorted to all out efforts to *protect* their material gain, their undeserved status. It is solely through these dispicible actions they *protect* the members from knowing the truth of their transgressions.

Nichiren did successfully refute all to the schools upon which SGI now bases it's teachings. Nichiren did correctly predict the ruination of those who persecuted him and distorted the teachings of the Buddha for their own personal gain. Nichiren taught that it was due to the appearance of *the votary of the Lotus Sutra* that the Buddha's golden words were proven true beyond a single doubt.

What great benefits are flowing into the lives of Ikedabots these days? Check out the Q&A segment near the end of the *live streaming of the Gosho Lecture on "Persecutions Befalling the Sage"-- posted just a few days ago. The senior MD leader claims "There was a mechanic right there at the gas station -ready and able (for his usual fee) to repair my leaking gas tank"-- and the YMD who flubbed his way through his part of the presentation of the Gosho talked about the *rags to troches* story of the SGI benefactor, the owner of the beautiful estate where the YMD enjoyed a wonderful camping experience, uniting with *their mentor*. Here are a few more I heard here in Boston:

MD Chapter chief: "I donated my own money for the benefit of the YMD picnic-- chanting to *give freely* and not begrudge the contribution. Almost immediately after the event, I encountered an on-line *tip* for remortgaging my home."

WD Region Leader :" Two more members of my family received Gohonzon, and though they are surrounded by *bad influences* I am personally making sure they attend meetings and get benefits"

35 year member, former WD District leader :"I just competed the training and received my certificate to teach yoga. I know practicing yoga does not lead to enlightenment, but it is a means to earn money and help myself and others improve their health - *win/win*."

WD Zone leader :"I gave my experience of past financial gain for my consistent financial contributions to the SGI. MY *dream* victorian home became available. I will *shakubuku* every one of my neighbors with this experience."

MD Zone Leader: "I don't have obstacles, everything goes pretty smoothly in my life- benefits I receive for building the *SGI* organization in Boston."

Tariq Hassan held a special meeting in Boston ~2010-- by popular request from *long time* members who were becoming discouraged because their benefits were now pale in comparison to those they received in the *early days of their practice*. Tariq's guidance :"You need to set specific goals. Write them down, put them on your altar. Take actions based on *your daimoku* everyday until you achieve them."

So what does a National SGI Leader share with members who are seeking to understand the purpose of their practice? A secular formula for success-- Tony Robbins is superior to Nichiren, according to Tariq.

SGI leaders will all come to ruin--- how many *unwitting members* can be spared from their fate??" Katie

Another astute individual wrote:

"I just came across an experience in the 10/23/09 issue of the World Tribune that is so ridiculous that I have to post about it. It's by a woman in California talking about how she and her daughter, named Destiny, overcame their problems through chanting and reading Ikeda's guidance. Towards the end of the article it reads:"

"I wish that I could hug President Ikeda and thank him for the difficulties he endured so that people like me can transform their lives and find happiness amid darkness. Destiny, now 4, chants with me every morning and evening, and asks to attend meetings every day. She has me start out the morning by reading out loud her favorite piece of President Ikeda's guidance. She asked me to frame it and put it on the wall next to our altar, which I did. He writes: 'Prayer is the courage to persevere. It is the struggle to overcome our own weakness and lack of confidence in ourselves. It is the act of impressing in the very depths of our being the conviction that we can change the situation without fail. Prayer is the way to destroy all fear. It is the way to banish sorrow, the way to light a torch of hope. It is the revolution that rewrites the scenario of our destiny.'"

Did you catch that her daughter is 4 years old? Four! Asking me to believe that your four-year-old wants to go to an SGI meeting every day is one thing, but asking me to believe that she even remotely understands that bit of guidance is insulting to my intelligence." -- SGBye

I noted:

"Dr. Kawada [SGI Vice President] treated fourteen people with stage four cancer. Some were not even SGI members. Their doctors had given up on all of them. One even had to be brought in on a stretcher. All fourteen people joined the SGI. They all learned to chant following this guidance of using the right side of their brain to project an image of no cancer in their bodies. In the U.S., last-stage cancer patients are encouraged to draw a white cell eating a cancer cell. Though this has been shown to help, practicing Buddhism has an even bigger impact. In two months the person on the stretcher overcame their cancer. Then his doctor joined. Eventually all fourteen overcame their cancer." --SGI leader's gudance

Then why didn't top SGI leaders Shin Yatomi and Pascal Oliveira overcome their Stage IV cancers?

Finally:

Regarding those conceited men and women who think that somehow, without their guidance, the Daimoku and Gohonzon is insufficient  to attain Buddhahood...They can talk your ear off, are often quite charming, but they are inveterate liars. They always have some experience about Sensei, how they overcame mesothelioma, otitis media*, or Bell's palsy**, by seeking and following Sensei.

*Actual SGI experience overcoming common ear infection. Another rediculous experience i encontered

** "I overcame Bell's Palsy in three weeks, not nine months as predicted by my doctors. The Nichikan Gohonzon works!!!" -- Richard SGI member

You must have some unlearned doctors Richard. Most people overcome their Bell's Palsy in a week or two. Jerry "Shinkei" Marcheso, while an independent, overcame brain cancer through a correct faith. SGI picks up on utter ordinariness and makes a big deal of it because there are so few extraordinary benefits in the Soka Gakkai [save, of course, for dear leader's 300 +  bought or cajoled honors and awards from secular fools].

Anyway, Nichiren Daishonin taught that even such "miracles" as overcoming brain cancer, let alone Bell's Palsy, pales in significance to faithfully practicing as the Lotus Sutra teaches, an impossibility for SGI members.

Perfect analysis of the SGI.

The daimoku they were chanting was fine. The equipment they used is interior. It sounds like one person was close to the mic, while the others sat further away. The person who could be heard the the loudest sounded like they were a bit nasal or being nasal.

I listened to them chant and at times I couldn't understand them. The other times I could hear them perfectly well. I could hear them pronounce the words precisely and clearly.

It wasn't their chanting that was the problem. It was the audio. They most likely used a camera that has a built in microphone. Those kinds of cameras have a bad reputation for for audio.

The visual of the video tells me that they were using an inexpensive camera.

ReplyDelete

Anonymous-- you are so wrong! There is nothing FINE about the desperate, buzzing sound that you are calling *daimoku* on this video! It is not due to inexpensive or inferior quality microphones, or video equipment-- it is due solely to the *minds* of those who are desperate to promote the egoism of their *mentor*-- who has claimed that one cannot attain Buddhahood without the *mentor/disciple* relationship, specifically Ikeda has stated that *the three SGI presidents* are the mentor and the SGI alone is propagating the *True Teachings* of Nichiren. This is a direct and very grave slander of the Lotus Sutra.

The insufferable buzzing sound, at the beginning of this video, is emitted from the gadflies who exert all of their efforts toward recruiting and maintaining the cult following of their *mentor* Ikeda--- elevating him to a status above the Buddha , believing THIS is their assurance of *material gain* and *status*.

Listen to the last segment of the Q&A-- all focused on *who is the eternal mentor*-- will it be Ikeda? Surely there is only a need for someone to handle *organizational matters* after his passing--so important to establish Ikedaism as the *new religion* SGI will practice and propagate. How bizarre!!

One leader insists *sensei* is still writing-- so prolifically that the translators cannot keep up with him! -- . Is THIS the reason Ikeda has been absent for so long? Others contend that Ikeda is either totally incapacitated or dead!

The truncated daimoku, chanted at fever pitch is the death tells for SGI, in my humble opinion.

-- For nothing in the minds of the leaders who continue to arrange and preside over these non-Buddhist activities comes close to the Buddha's intent-- They USE their truncated daimoku as the means for propagating the self serving agenda of a megalomanic who, for all intents and purposes has disappeared from their collapsing stage.

Please, anonymous--- do not insult the True teaching, Myoho-renge-kyo by claiming that those who steal it, distort it and propagate their own version of Buddhism are FINE. THEY are not FINE and neither is what they chant!!

Debate is like a cross to a vampire with most SGI leaders

"I can't even get a long time friend, a very dear friend in fact, to *debate* even the doctrines of the SGI--.

She has practiced about 35 years-- is a WD Region Leader, who sent me a copy of "The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra"-- vol. 5-- wanting to study *together* the Never Disparaging Chapter of the Lotus sutra-- as per Ikeda's guidance in print in this SGI study manual.

When I challenged Ikeda's *wisdom* she had to *end discussion with me*-- had to remind me that *my negativity* would only cause me more suffering and that I was turning down a golden opportunity to study with her, because she is caring for *new members*-- letting me make a cause that I cannot make because SGI Boson gave me the boot.

Debate is like a cross to a vampire with most SGI leaders-- Odd, that somehow, they believe Ikeda *took care of all that for them*-- have you ever heard of a more non-Buddhist attitude?

They don't need to engage in no stinking debate!!

I am still reeling from the shock----" -- Katie

OH GAWD!!! Ikeda has already won the debate? He was debating the Nichiren Shu with the Nichiren Shoshu doctrine [Otaru debate]. The blind leading the blind.

"That is why we are willing to engage in debate with you, Nichiren Shoshu, or anyone who claims to know the truth. You have to admit it takes cheek, but...." -- SGI leader

Greg Martin also turned down my offer for a formal debate.

I responded to them that the SGI will not debate because they do not have the ammunition to win the debate and this is the real reason for their refusal. Al, being a PR specialist, his reason for not debating is neither factual nor substantial. My contention is that a formal debate should be held face to face in an auditorium, with video camera documentation and neutral judges.

Also, to what end should I debate you informally? Paul Wersant was defeated and he is still as arrogant as ever; never converted; apparently didn't learn anything from the debate; and worst of all, he slanders us more than he did before the debate.

It is Mappo and the debate was already won by Nichiren yet, many refused to believe. I have no illusion about my meager debating abilities compared to the master but I continue to correct erroneous views for my own edification, yours, and because I highly respect true Buddhism. The poison has penetrated deeply in the lives of most SGI and Nichiren Shoshu members. I have no false hope that I am capable of saving the vast majority of them. I just defend what the Buddha has entrusted to me and hope that one or two of them may be converted to the true teachings, if even for an hour or a day.

The death of Shin Yatomi

Nichiren teaches:

"The Nirvana Sutra in essence teaches us that when persons who have faith in the Buddhist teachings and are determined to free themselves from the sufferings of birth and death grow a little faint in heart, the Buddha inflicts illness upon them in order to encourage them to strive harder. He does so to embolden them, to drive them forward."

In essence, this means that the Buddha inflicts illness to awaken a seeking spirit for the Law. Shin Yatomi mistakenly awakened a seeking spirit for Sensei rather than for the Law. He embraced not the Lotus Sutra and the teachings of Nichiren but rather the teachings of Ikedaism. Nichiren also teaches, "To give an analogy, a mild illness can be cured with ordinary medicine, but a severe illness requires an elixir". Late stage lung cancer requires the elixir of the Lotus Sutra not Ikedaism.

Likewise, he was an enemy of Nichiren. By altering and teaching an inferior religion [Ikedaism], he was ostensibly attacking Nichiren:

"Those persons who treat Nichiren as an enemy all attack him. The heavenly gods all [abandon] this country. [The Lotus Sutra] states, “[If this person] on seeing those who read, recite, copy, and uphold this sutra, should despise, hate, envy, or bear grudges against them,...” It also says, “[He will be] plagued by many ailments, thin and gaunt.” And the eighth volume states, “[And he will] suffer from severe and malignant illnesses.” The second volume also states, “Though he might practice the art of medicine and by its methods cure someone’s disease, the person would grow sicker from some other malady and perhaps in the end would die.” And it goes on to say, “If he himself had an illness, no one would aid or nurse him, and though he took good medicine, it would only make his condition worse.”

Lastly and most importantly, as taught by Nichiren, the most severe illnesses ["malignant illnesses"] are caused by slandering the Law and the votaries of the Lotus Sutra. Shin Yatomi slandered the Law and the votaries by claiming that not one member of the orthodox sects will attain Buddhahood through their faith and practice and that their copies of Nichiren inscribed Gohonzons have no power.
