No where in the Gosho is confidence [as in self confidence] mentioned or discussed. SGI and all New Age teachings stress confidence ["true confidence"]. Nichiren, on the other hand mentions or discusses faith at least 500 times. More important than self confidence in Buddhism is confidence [actually faith] in the Law, the Buddha, the True Votary of the Lotus Sutra, universal Buddha-nature, and the eternal nature of our lives. Don't confuse SGI or New Age with the Lotus Sutra Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin.
