"Why do you enshrine a statue of Shakyamuni along with the Gohonzon? Shakyamuni is already on the Gohonzon" -- Dee Goldberg Nichiren Shoshu member

"The Three Treasures of the Buddha, the Law and the
Priest are one.  This is clear if one examines the way
in which the True Object of Worship, the Gohonzon, is
enshrined in this sect.  At many local temples, for
example, the Gohonzon are enshrined in the 'Three
Treasures Within One Body' mode, in which we pray to the
three treasures embodied within one Gohonzon. Yet, at
the Miedo (Image Hall) at the Head Temple, the staue of
the Daishonin is enshrined in front of the Gohonzon.
Nonetheless, even though the Person and the Law are
separate, each carries the significance of the 'Three
Treasures Within One Body'.  Further, within such temple
structures as the Grand Reception Hall at the Head
Temple, when one faces the Gohonzon, to the left, there
is an enshrined statue of the Daishonin, and to the
right, one of Nikko Shonin.  In this way, WE ARE ABLE TO
OFFER OUR PRAYER TO EACH TREASURE INDIVIDUALLY.
Although this form is entitled 'The 3 treasures in
Separate Bodies', because they are enshrined in a
trinity,THEY FORM A SINGLE GOHONZON.  It therefore
follows that the treasure of the priest is to be
ragarded with as much reverence as the Treasure of the
Buddha and the Treasure of the Law."  (pp11-12

  1. Nichiren too is on the Gohonzon Dee. I suggest you take it up with your priest why you have statue arrangements at your head temple [although his explanation is fairly clear.
