I remember reading this at the time and what I thought.I just saw it as a way to discrete Ikeda because he was this powerful man proving the power of the Buddhist faith.It was only when I realised they were not worshiping the Lotus Sutra although they were chanting the abbreviated version but they were promoting a Guru worship that I knew was wrong no matter how they explained the mentor and disciple relationship.The whole religion I know now is riding on the back of the true buddhism but at the same time distorting it. Did not the gosho say that true Buddhism could only be destroyed within.The maggot in bowls of the lion.
