Nikko Shonin's view differs from both the Nichiren Shoshu's and the Soka Gakkai's

"In order to make sure which is the right teaching for attaining Buddhahood, I listened to the preachings of various priests. As a result, I have come to believe in the Lotus Sutra, in which it is expounded that Nichiren Shonin is the Bodhisattva Jogyo commanded by Sakyamuni Buddha, Lord of the Saha World and parent of all living beings, to appear in the Latter Days of the Law as a messenger of the Buddha with the duty of propagating the Lotus Sutra." -- Nikko

  1. Can you prove that this translation is correct. My wife who is Japanese says many times the English translations are incorrect. E.g. the Sokka Gakkai Buddhist Dictionary - shiki shin funi - 5 components in the 3 existences etc.

Because of our culture has a monotheistic view we tend to interpret something to be so perfect , almighty,, everlasting that doesn't carry any potential of falling down, she says that Nichiren said the same problem happens within Buddhism (Geddo) and Nichiren's message was that who ever was the historical Buddha, Shakymuni, Nichiren or anyone else is just as important as the eternal Buddha which she says is the Buddhas Amala consciousness/ Dharma/Law body. The historical Shakyamuni and Nihiren both reached the highest state through cultivation in the same way that all of us have the same opportunity through out our infinite lives . And that everything changed after he nearly had his head chopped off . After that incident he said the old Nichiren is dead. It comes from Opening of the eyes but if you choose to believe it is a forgery, then it becomes another fork in the road

  2. In light of the Lotus Sutra and writings of Nichiren, this view is certainly consistant. I will try and dig up the source and we can study it together. How does that sound?
