Rev. Ryuei's reflection

http://fraughtwithperil.com/ryuei/2012/10/12/secularized-buddhism-and-the-lotus-sutra/

"It would seem that modern adherents of the Lotus Sūtra, whether Nichiren Shū bishops such as Senchu Murano or Zen Masters like Taigen Dan Leighton or Thich Nhat Hanh, have no problem with a metaphorical approach to the Lotus Sūtra and its traditions, teachings, and practices. Their commentaries have already opened up the way to a profounder reading of the sūtra than the merely literal."

Senchu Murano's understanding of Ichinen Sanzen did not go beyond that of an SGI Junior Group Chief's and Thich Nath Hanh and Dan Leighton are hardly practicers of the Lotus Sutra. For example, In An Aspect of Nichiren Buddhism, Senchu Murano teaches that the Daimoku is a mere symbol. Dan Leighton is proud of Dogen's awakening in a dream of "stepping on a piece of shit which declares itself to be Shakyamuni Buddha." and Thich Nat Hanh teaches the equality of the Avatamsaka [Flower Garland] and Lotus Sutra. These men have not plumbed the depths of the Lotus Sutra Samadhi as do [did] Nichiren Daishonin and his followers. Murano, Leighton, and Hanh have a warped faith and lame practice. How could they ever realize the Samadhi of the Lotus Sutra? They praise the Sutra but destroy its intent. Ryuei is enamored of such men because in these men he sees his reflection.
