We have a standardized practice, so once one determines to practice, one need only chant Namu myoho renge kyo and the two essential chapters of the Lotus Sutra (2nd and 16th) in the morning and evening with faith in the mandala or object of worship. The Gohonzon [mandala or cluster of blessings] is a depiction of the land and life of the Eternal Buddha at the moment of transfer of his teachings [Namu Myoho renge kyo] to the Bodhisattvas of the Earth). We strive to benefit all living beings and study Buddhism centering on the Lotus Sutra and the writings of Nichiren Daishonin. No one tells you how much to chant, study or perform conversion activities. You may have meetings, attend meetings or not attend meetings. Converting another often requires wisdom, assiduousness,"offering of alms" (giving of the Law and your time), forbearance, magnanimity, and meditation (prayer). Occasionally one encounters another who seeks the way so earnestly that he or she will find you. The internet has proven to be a good medium for converting people. We are all disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha and Nichiren Daishonin whether priest or layman as long as we do the practice as outlined above with faith and to the best of our abilities. It's fun and challenging to learn the rythym and pronunciation of the chant by chanting with others but a recording will suffice (since we have few members). One also needs to know the basics for setting up a Buddhist altar and caring for the object of worship (Gohonzon).
