Nichiren also states,
"I am entrusting you with a Gohonzon for the protection of your young child. This Gohonzon is the essence of the Lotus Sutra and the eye of all the scriptures. It is like the sun and the moon in the heavens, a great ruler on earth, the heart in a human being, the wish-granting jewel among treasures, and the pillar of a house.
When we have this mandala with us, it is a rule that all the Buddhas and gods will gather round and watch over us, protecting us like a shadow day and night, just as warriors guard their ruler, as parents love their children, as fish rely on water, as trees and grasses crave rain, and as birds depend on trees. You must trust in it with all your heart."
and
and
"Bodhisattvas such as Manjushrī, who lives in the Golden-colored World, Maitreya, in the palace of the Tushita heaven, and Perceiver of the World’s Sounds, on Mount Potalaka, and Bodhisattva Medicine King, who is a disciple of the Buddha Sun Moon Pure Bright Virtue, all vied with one another in asking [the Buddha’s permission to propagate the Gohonzon in the Latter Day of the Law], but he refused. The Buddha declared: “Those bodhisattvas are known for their excellent wisdom and profound learning, but since they have only recently begun to hear them Lotus Sutra, their understanding is still limited. Thus they would not be able to endure the great difficulties of the latter age. My true disciples I have kept hidden in the depths of the earth for numberless major world system dust particle kalpas. I will entrust it to them.” So saying, the Buddha summoned Bodhisattva Superior Practices and the other bodhisattvas in the “Emerging from the Earth” chapter and entrusted them with the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo, the heart of the essential teaching of the Lotus Sutra."
and
"I HAVE offered prayers to the Gohonzon of Myoho-renge-kyo. Though this mandala has but five or seven characters, it is the teacher of all Buddhas throughout the three existences and the seal that guarantees the enlightenment of all women. It will be a lamp in the darkness of the road to the next world and a fine horse to carry you over the mountains of death. It is like the sun and moon in the heavens or Mount Sumeru on earth. It is a ship to ferry people over the sea of the sufferings of birth and death. It is the teacher who leads all people toBuddhahood and enlightenment. This great mandala has never yet been propagated anywhere in Jambudvīpa in the more than 2,220 years since the Buddha’s passing."
Nichiren endowed us with the Gohonzon without. As far as the Gohonzon within, Nichiren teaches that Shakyamuni Buddha endowed us with the Five or Seven Characters of [Namu] Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo in the infinite past. Therefore, Shakyamuni Buddha endowed us with the Gohonzon within.
The true aspect doesn't exist without all phenomena. If we only needed the 5 or 7 characters in the Gohonzon it wouldn't of progressed to a complete 10 world Gohonzon

DeleteIf it didn't need to improve the first of Nichiren's Gohonzon would of been the first and the last.
DeleteJust through observation alone of these characters without even knowing what they mean,
From Gohonzon 1 - 123 you can see the phenomena progressively filling in the empty space either side of Namu Myoho Renge Kyo the 7 characters in the middle of the Gohonzon as the years go by
None of Nichiren Shoshu's Gohonzon's are on display here. It is because their custodians don't want to share them for some reason. Hopefully the truth will come out one day where there will be an official statement from the acting High Priest about why they behaved in such manner over the years

Hello Noel.
Deletei asked for citations for what you posted. instead you give me :
'Just through observation alone', 'you can see' and ' It is because'.
these are opinions, not citations of gosho or the sutra.
this next post seems to be entirely based on opinion:
'"evolution of Nichiren's thought and ever strengthening belief that all people possess the Buddha nature and the immanence of both good and evil."
The evolution of Nichirens conviction showed up in his writings and Gohonzons.
The Buddha nature and the immanence of both good and evil would have to be the most widely misunderstood concept of all world religions of the past present and future and undoubtedly through out the multiverse
It is good to make use of the Gohonzon to switch on the Buddha nature that eclipses evil
The Gohonzons mission is to present the complete ichinen sanzen that is identical to our life otherwise it cant be our mirror
If the physical mandala Gohonzon is not even necessary, then it wasn't necessary for Nichiren to be born in this world to inscribe the complete Ten world Gohonzon which is the integration of the functioning of ichinen sanzen
Think of the Gohonzon as a mirror. “Never seek this Gohonzon outside yourself,” the Gohonzon is also found only in faith but what kind of faith are we talking about is what matters
If Daimoku alone or even just the Character Myo is sufficient then Ho wouldn't matter
One does not exist without the other
Myo is the true aspect of phenomena and Ho is phenomena they are one
Daimoku implies all phenomena but if chanted while purposely rejecting the unification of the 3 bodies; Ku / the truth of non substantiality, Ke / the truth of temporary existence, and Chu / the truth of the Middle Way as manifested in the complete 10 world Gohonzon that was given for us to use after his death, then this would be a slanderous belief that would result in suffering according to my present understanding of NB
The Gohonzon is the unification of the 3 truths that has multiple meanings such as;
the first three of the 10 factors; appearance, nature, entity.
3 bodies; Dharma Body, Reward Body and Manifest Body.
Threefold truth; Ku / the truth of non substantiality, Ke / the truth of temporary existence, and Chu / the truth of the Middle Way
In order to have complete and not a partial faith we need to know what it is that we are looking at, otherwise it would be like looking into a mirror where parts of our body are missing. This is a metaphor for the 3 worlds that are missing in Nichikan's Gohonzon and other deficient Gohonzons that are prayed to by those who don't know any better, should know better by now and those that don't want to know about it even though they have found out about it'.
who told you this? i would recommend that you read the following gosho:
honzon mondo sho
hokke shuyo sho
junyoze ji
jishosho
and study the following buddhist terms:
shoho jisso
jikai gogu
zettai myo
sotai myo
These writings should give you a better understanding of the concepts that you tried to express.
your opinions sound to me like a mix of shoshu, sgi, and various shu concepts.

DeleteHi Shinkei
DeleteHope this helps to clarify your query about my opinion of what this Gosho is relating to. We all have our opinions in which at times we agree to disagree and that's fine by me
"I asked for citations for what you posted. instead you give me :

This is my opinion about what this Gosho is talking about when he said that he fulfilled the purpose of his advent on the second year of Kōan (1279) it matches up with the Gohonzon chart 1 - 123
Citation
Nichiren said on first day of the tenth month of the second year of Kōan (1279) "Buddha fulfilled the purpose of his advent in a little over forty years, the Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai took about thirty years, and the Great Teacher Dengyō, some twenty years. I have spoken repeatedly of the indescribable persecutions they suffered during those years. For me it took twenty-seven years, and the great persecutions I faced during this period are well known to you all. (On Persecutions Befalling the Sage)
This is what I think the authentic Gosho 'Persecutions Falling a Sage' that Nichiren wrote at Minobu on October 1 of the second year of Kōan (1279) is talking about when he said that he fulfilled the purpose of his advent. I believe it started started on the second month of the second year of Kōan (1279) the same year when he inscribed the 60th Gohonzon to Nichimoku, Nikko's disciple
If you look at the charts of the progression of the Gohonzon from number 1- 60 there was a significant change at number 60 of 123 Gohonzons in this Japanese chart.
http://homepage3.nifty.com/juhoukai/mandara/mandaraitiran.html
[none of Nichiren Shoshu's Gohonzons are on this list],
This was the first time Devadatta appeared in the Gohonzon on the second month of the second year of Kōan (1279). The true presentation of the oneness of good and evil is now complete and ready for transformation by Myoho Renge Kyo
Nichiren Daishonin wrote this letter 'persecutions falling a sage' at Minobu on October 1 of the second year of Kōan (1279)
The Nichiren Shoshu claim that on October 12, of the second year of Kōan (1279) Nichiren Shonin inscribed the Dai-Gohonzon in which he the fulfilled the purpose of his advent
Nichiren fulfilled the purpose of his advent was about 7 months before the so called Dai Gohonzon was inscribed that started on the second month of the second year of Kōan (1279) when he inscribed the 1st non suspicious authentic complete ten world Gohonzon
Since Nichiren Shoshu don't display their Gohonzon's we can't really tell if no. 60 is the first authentic complete ten world Gohonzon but if we lack the evidence of their existence of their Gohonzon's like their Dai Gohonzon how can we trust them
Even if they have authentic complete ten world Gohonzon's
the purpose of Nichiren's advent was to inscribe a complete ten world Gohonzon's to transform the suffering that the negative life states of the ten worlds create in our lives and all sentient and insentient beings of this world and over to worlds to come, and no individual or sect has the right to create a monopoly on that for their personal gain
"The sutras which came before the Lotus Sutra taught that all phenomena derive from one's mind. The mind is like the earth, and phenomena are like the plants growing in the earth. But the Lotus Sutra teaches that the mind is one with the earth and the earth is one with its plants. The provisional sutras say that a tranquil mind is like the moon and a pure heart is like a flower, but the Lotus Sutra states that the flower and moon are themselves heart and mind. Therefore, it is obvious that rice is not merely rice but life itself." (The gift of rice)
DeleteEarth and mind is like the Amala consciousness and plant is like the Alaya consciousness .
Before the Lotus Sutra the Heart is like earth / ground / soil that comes first and then the plant comes after
Before the lotus sutra they thought that the manifest body and reward body came from the Dharma body
They thought that the Dharma body came first
The Lotus Sutra says the manifest body, reward body and Dharma body are one. this is same principal of oneness of Ku, Ke, Chu (Three Truths)
The true aspect is the dharma body / Chu, and the heart is the ( earth, ground, soil) in this Gosho.
All phenomena is reward body/ ku ,manifest body/ ke, = plant.
Before the Lotus Sutra , they thought all phenomena came from the true aspect.
The Lotus Sutra revealed the true aspect and all phenomena always exist together.
There is no such a thing that one exist before another. It all exists simultaneously = life itself
That is the argument of many and you may well be right. Other's assert that a physical mandala Gohonzon is not even necessary, and still other's, as you pointed out, that the Daimoku alone or even just the Character Myo is sufficient [based on the Sho Hokke Daimoku Sho]. Personally, I too think it shows an evolution of Nichiren's thought and ever strengthening belief that all people possess the Buddha nature and the immanence of both good and evil.
