Why does SGI write Nam Myoho renge kyo billions of times in their books and periodicals but Nichiren only and exclusively wrote Namu Myoho renge kyo? Are they dyslexic? Do they know more than Nichiren?
Great Question! There is a formidable commenter on ARBN, iainx, who says he is dyslexic, and you can see for yourself, he always writes :Namu-myoho-renge-kyo; and from his insightful commentary, i conclude he is chanting the seven characters just like he says he does:-)-- So if dyslexia is not the problem, then maybe SGI does believe it knows better than Nichiren?
I am approaching this crucial matter today from passages written by Nichiren, in the Gosho"The Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra". Taking a closer look at what Nichiren knew...
The very first thing that struck me was how could it be that in this latter age , the "Law" could become so easy to encounter? Written billions of times, as you say, Mark-- chanted by millions all over the world and propagated as the *easiest of all* practices of Buddhism--How can this be? Was Nichiren dead wrong when he said:
"The first volume of the Lotus sutra states, "Throughout numberless and incalculable kalpas it will be a DIFFICULT THING TO HEAR THE LAW. and the fifth volume says, "As for this Lotus Sutra, throughout countless numbers of countries one cannot even hear THE NAME OF IT. "This it is an EXTREMELY RARE thing to HEAR THE NAME OF THE LOTUS SUTRA. " (MW vol III p.7)
Wait a minute-- Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is NOT the "Law" that Nichiren wrote for us to chant-- it's missing the character, "mu". Viewed from this strict perspective, in terms of belief in what Nihiren wrote as the basis for arousing faith, then it is NAMU-Myoho-renge-kyo that is a RARE THING to encounter-- how interesting.
SGI boasts how easy it is making it to *hear the Law*-- really putting Nichiren in his place on that prediction Nichiren made from the Lotus Sutra--hunh, Aiden Straus???
But Aiden and Bill Aiken, along with Greg Martin and Danny Nagashima can't seem to sit still long enough to hear that they're easy to spread version is the *wrong* LAW !!
Why can't they *hear* this? Must be they have gone deaf due to the years of exposure to the Buzzzzzing sound of their *truncated daimoku* ??
