SGI stresses that disrupting the unity of believers (Ha Wagoso) is the worst Buddhist sin and the principle cause for falling into hell. Nichiren, on the other hand, teaches that slander of the profound teachings and nurturing evil companions is the worst sin:
“A person of wisdom should not fear enemy households, snakes, the poison of fire, the god Indra, the roll of thunder, attacks by swords and staves, or wild beasts such as tigers, wolves, and lions. For these can only destroy one’s life, but cannot cause one to fall into the Avichi hell, which is truly terrifying. What one should fear is slander of the profound teaching as well as companions who are slanderers, for these will surely cause one to fall into the frightful Avichi hell. Even if one befriends evil companions and with evil intent spills the Buddha’s blood, kills one’s own father and mother, takes the lives of many sages, disrupts the unity of the Buddhist Order, and destroys all one’s roots of goodness, if one fixes one’s mind on the correct teaching, one can free oneself from that place. But if there is someone who slanders the inconceivably profound teaching, that person will for immeasurable kalpas be unable to obtain emancipation. However, if there is one who can cause others to awaken to and take faith in a teaching such as this, then that person is their father and mother, and also their good friend. This is a person of wisdom. After the Thus Come One’s passing, that person corrects false views and perverse thoughts, and causes people to enter the true way. For that reason, he has pure faith in the three treasures, and his virtuous actions lead others to enlightenment.” (The Problem To Be Pondered Night and Day)
The SGI, because they correct correct views and compliant thoughts and cause people to enter the false way, stress the lesser evil of breaking the unity of believers (which, in the case of opposing the SGI for their greater evil of distorting the teachings, is actually a great good), second only to the greatest good of practicing as the Buddha Shakyamuni, the Lotus Sutra, and Nichiren Daishonin teach.

They promote extreme, vanity, greed, selfishness which defy the eight fold path, and middle way. They promote the bullshit, new age law of attraction, which has no mercy or compassion. They promote cults of personality. They promote nuclear power, which is killing all life on earth, and defys the law of, Do no harm.

ReplyDeleteEmpty, superficial, magical-thinking, Ignorance is apparent. There is a great lack of teaching, and understanding, the history of buddhism.
ReplyDeleteNichiren buddhism, too. The publications are full of empty aphorisms, and exhortations that are aimed at a 3rd grade mentality. Like american national tv.
When one can find someone who will discuss buddhism, it is very simplistic. It is stupified by absurdities, like that ikeda is a buddha. I try to read ikeda and it is a mishmash of simplistic and popculture gobbledy goop. Fuk that.
Mostly what they say, is that ikeda is a buddha,they cannot say why. Not as bad as christian cultists who are blloodthirsty bastards, and psychotic creeps mostly, but still cultish.
Their community center meetings are largely testimonials, and ikeda cheer leading exercises, with little depth. They chant way to fast.
They support each other in rudimentary ways. Which is good. That is spiritual, in my view. Group leaders talk to people in distress, and chant with them.That is the only redeeming part of the religious practice. Far too many suffering and hard working people are alone in this neoliberal meatgrinder society.
Seems like the group leaders, are more educated. Some may even understand the subtleties of buddhist teaching. In my area, are all group leaders are burned out. It is a combination of the destruction of the middle class in the age of Trump, and the emptiness of sgi buddhism. Group leadersare quitting the practice. The buddhist message of sgi is heavily diluted by ikeda worship. Japan itself is collapsing. The shenanigans of sgi in japan, do not reflect well here. The new komeito. Keeping abe in power. The fukushima mess. Japans new militarism, keeping nuclear reactors open.
America has become, an extremely degenerate society, on the verge of collapse. The nuclear age. Nonsustainability. Extreme materialism, exploitation, imperialism. Many educated people here have been open and seeking the past 50 years. The ignorance and brutality of the abrahamic religions, the nihilistic atheist cults like ayn rand, of crass materialism and empirialism have destroyed this society. Sgi and ikedaism are a syrupy, sweet acquiesence to the same machine.

Good analysis Anonymous. One, whether an individual or society like the SGI can not hope to lessen their karmic retribution by destroying the Lotus Sutra and the teachings of Nichiren. One can not hope to become a Buddha by throwing out one's original teacher, the Master of teachings, Shakyamuni Buddha of the Juryo Chapter of the Lotus Sutra.
