Nichiren talked about winning and losing ["victory or defeat"] in several writings but never at the expense of honesty, honor, and leading an ethical life. In another writing he stated: "However wretched a beggar you might become, never disgrace the Lotus Sutra." There are no guarantees in life. Winning is to never disgrace the Lotus Sutra even if one becomes a wretched beggar.
