"Shō-bō, Noto-bō, and the lay nun of Nagoe10 were once Nichiren’s disciples. Greedy, cowardly, and foolish, they nonetheless pass themselves off as wise persons. When persecutions befell me, they took advantage of these to convince many of my followers to drop out. If you allow yourself to be so persuaded, those in Suruga who seem to believe in the Lotus Sutra, as well as the others who are about to take faith in it, will all discard the sutra without exception. There are a few in this province of Kai who have expressed their desire to take faith. Yet I make it a rule not to permit them to join us unless they remain steadfast in their resolve. Some people, despite their shallow understanding, pretend staunch faith and speak contemptuously to their fellow believers, thus often disrupting the faith of others. Leave such people strictly alone. The time will certainly come when, by the workings of Brahmā, Shakra, and other gods, the entire Japanese nation will simultaneously take faith in the Lotus Sutra. At that time, I am convinced, many people will insist that they too have believed since the very beginning."

"It goes without saying that our Soka Gakkai is an organization of Nichiren Shoshu believers. Therefore, worshipping the Dai-Gohonzon and serving the high priest is the fundamental spirit of the Gakkai." Daisaku Ikeda, Inaugural address of president Ikeda, 1960
Delete"The basis of Nichiren Shoshu is the Lifeblood recieved only by a single person. To faithfully follow the High Priest of the bequethal of the Lifeblood is the correct way for priests and lay believers. If one is mistaken about this single point, then everything will become insane." Daisaku Ikeda, Discussing Kosen-rufu and Human Life, Vol. 3, p. 32

ReplyDeleteThis is very explicit statement with no caveats. I think that speaking to or about fellow believers with a contemptuous tone reflects "shallow understanding". I say this because if one does not believe that all possess the Buddha nature and that those who recite the daimoku are respect worthy, then they are lacking understanding of the profound, unique teaching of the Lotus Sutra. Only in the LS does the Buddha teach that ALL have the potential to attain Buddhahood; that He has fulfilled His vow to make it possible for ALL living beings to attain the same benefits He, the Buddha has attained-- simply by hearing and believing the LS.
Pre Lotus Sutra, even killing the enemies of the Buddha's teachings was acceptable, for example.
If it weren't for the fact that the contemptuous trashing of "other" Nichiren sects, comprised of believers who recite the daimoku, occurs on a public forum, I would abide Nichiren's admonition and leave Mark & co. "strictly alone".
Regarding the "difference in daimoku chanted by one who goes against the sutra's intent"; I take that to heart for self reflection and self correction, NOT as a directive to generalize and condemn others.
Nichiren encouraged his followers to read his writings together, encouraging discussion not weaponizing his teachings.

Would love to hear your take on the teachings "discussed", rather than more expressions of contempt for believers, gregorio. Or maybe you don't believe that particular Gosho passage?
Deleteyou are very welcome to go away then.
ReplyDeletegregorio
And what of your common mortal mind ?
ReplyDeleteI think you know me well enough to realize I act from my belief in Myoho Renge Kyo and am not perturbed by your patronizing dismissal !
Again, it is you who cannot discuss the teachings.. yet .
