Response to many comments 1

Andy: how powerful is myoho renge kyo? you will see it in your own life and should disregard the interference others may bring by way of elevating themselves tho the teaching itself does not permit such self aggrandizement trust the Law Trust your own daimoku. get up and step away from your keyboard to where your life actually exists! Andy

heart matters most... the unfeeling amongst us lacking a heart for others will need many more lifetimes of daimoku to escape the sufferings of birth and death praise for all who maintain courage to practice and share both suffering and joy with fellow believers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\

no thanks, doc you lost the battle for truth, integrity and authenticity here... Andy

Mark: Lets talk about the aggrandizement of Daisaku Ikeda and the High Priest. If pointing people exclusively to the Eternal Buddha (Lotus Sutra) and Nichiren is aggandizement, I'm guilty. My truth is the Lotus Sutra and writings of Nichiren. The greatest act of heart and compassion is pointing out how SGI, NST and others defame and distort the teachings. To proclaim that the Succession is through the Scrolls of the Sutra and authentic writings of Nichiren and not the aphorisms of a corrupt Guru (Ikeda) is to help human beings escape tthe Four Lower Worlds and protect life. Nichiren teaches in Questions and Answers on Embracing the Lotus Sutra:

"Again, in the second volume it says, “I am the only person who can rescue and protect others.” And it speaks of “desiring only to accept and embrace the sutra of the great vehicle and not accepting a single verse of the other sutras.”2 These passages mean that only Shakyamuni Buddha can save and protect all living beings, and that one should wish to accept and uphold only the Lotus Sutra, and never even a verse from any other sutra."3

In depreciating Shakyamuni Buddha, going to an SGI meeting and not even mentiong "Shakyamuni Buddha" one time and Nichiren perhaps once or twice while mentioning Daisaku Ikeda one hundred times is to destroy, not to protect the teachings. To assert mentor-disciple, a Shingon principle, as the prime point of the Lotus Sutra is neither to protect the teachings nor those who chant the Daimoku. It destroys faith in the Daimoku, Lotus Sutra and Eternal Buddha.

"Because Japan is a country where the correct teaching is slandered, heaven has abandoned it. And because heaven has abandoned it, the various benevolent deities who in the past guarded and protected the nation have burned their shrines and returned to the Capital of Tranquil Light."

This is the reality of Japan yesterday and today.

Andy: another follower of the Rogow gloom and doom anti Nichiren blog! or just a sad reminder that internet junkies are most at risk for mental illness, depression and suicidality, radicalization and committing violence. step way from this poison and live fully where you stand! Andy

Mark: How many World Tribunes and Human Revolution Novels quote the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren or direct the members to study the Lotus Sutra and writings of Nichiren? Again, their purpose is the aggrandizement of one man, Shinichi Yamamoto (Daisaku Ikeda). Here you will read what Nichiren and the Lotus Sutra (Eternal Buddha) teach. I was about to go postal in the capitol, commit myself to a mental institution for shock therapy or lobotomy, and then hang myself but thanks to you Andy, I'm filled with so much Joy. Andy, you have learned well the cult art of bull baiting.

Anonymous: Everything in the universe is in a constant state of flux... change is the rule.. Nichiren himself described how his beliefs and faith changed while a young priest in a monastery... but here on EP-- stagnation, grudge holding, defamation and deflection is the rule. Survey says : Provisional teachings - not the LS are preached here. Correction : Jerry belonged to SGI when he overcame "brain tumor"-- chanted Nam Myoho Renge Kyo as did Greg Romero when he "lessened the effects of heart attack and stroke" You will not find truth or sincerity here.. Apparently this has become well known.... stagnation/entropy is an insipid obstacle. thus I have seen on EP !

Mark: For nineteen years I was SGI and I changed when I came to see the evil of the SGI cult and the beauty of the equality of the Kempon Hokke and the importance of the writings. Here you will find the facts of the teachings and the dark reality of the various sects, their leaders and priests. Nichiren defamed the evil priests and laymen of his time. The Mutual Possession of the Ten Worlds explains it well...The World of Anger exists in the Worlds of bodhisattva and Buddhahood. Nichiren's anger was righteous anger and so is mine. You must point out how "provisional teachings are preached here. I have battled the Tibetans, Vajrayanists (Shingon), Zenmen, Hinayanists, Pure Landers and others for nearly 25 years. Have you. I promote the exclusive faith and practice of the Lotus Sutra, that which offers salvation for masses 0of being and peace and security in this life and a fortunate birth in the next.

Andy: true believers use Nichiren's words to self reflection. While others cherry pick passages, extract the pits from those cherries and load their muskets to attack fellow believers. Absolutely unheard of in Nichiren's time. all who follow Mark down the rabbit hole have failed to believe that all who embrace, recite the daimoku are to be revered. Mark has yet to embrace the true intent of the Lotus Sutra: It is for ALL living beings in the degenerative age... ALL possess the Buddha nature ALL are worthy of respect. Those two "cherries" from the Lotus Sutra and Gosho are constantly discarded by M<ark. Internet Buddhism? Two decades worth of proof that these sites become sewers. Mark, you are guilty of all these : " ***The Ten Evil Acts: "They are the three physical evils of killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct; the four verbal evils of lying, flattery or indiscriminate and irresponsible speech, defamation, and duplicity; and the three mental evils of greed, anger, and foolishness or the holding of mistaken views..." but. you are unable to self reflect and self correct... and are going the way of so many who look outward and view themselves to be superior... This whole blog is rotting away.. much like the pulp of the cherries you discarded.. Andy

Mark: No one is more in need of self reflection than the Soka Gakkai leaders and well established members. I do not cherry pick passages. I employ the entire canon of Nichiren, highlighting the Five Major Works and not only one translation. Here is the most glaring example. You would do well to read what Nichiren has to say about the Eternal Buddha:

Nichiren's One Original Eternal Buddha Doctrine

Nichiren's Comprehensive Teachings on Shakyamuni Buddha in Three Parts

Probably Katie: " . Some people, despite their shallow understanding, pretend staunch faith and speak contemptuously to their fellow believers, thus often disrupting the faith of others. Leave such people strictly alone."

This is very explicit statement with no caveats. I think that speaking to or about fellow believers with a contemptuous tone reflects "shallow understanding". I say this because if one does not believe that all possess the Buddha nature and that those who recite the daimoku are respect worthy, then they are lacking understanding of the profound, unique teaching of the Lotus Sutra. Only in the LS does the Buddha teach that ALL have the potential to attain Buddhahood; that He has fulfilled His vow to make it possible for ALL living beings to attain the same benefits He, the Buddha has attained-- simply by hearing and believing the LS. Pre Lotus Sutra, even killing the enemies of the Buddha's teachings was acceptable, for example. If it weren't for the fact that the contemptuous trashing of "other" Nichiren sects, comprised of believers who recite the daimoku, occurs on a public forum, I would abide Nichiren's admonition and leave Mark & co. "strictly alone".

Regarding the "difference in daimoku chanted by one who goes against the sutra's intent"; I take that to heart for self reflection and self correction, NOT as a directive to generalize and condemn others. Nichiren encouraged his followers to read his writings together, encouraging discussion not weaponizing his teachings.

Yes Katie, "fellow believers". Not the following types of people:

"How great is the difference between the blessings received when a sage chants the daimoku and the blessings received when we chant it" to reply, one is in no way superior to the other. the gold that a fool possesses is no different from the gold that a wise man possesses; a fire made by a fool is the same as a fire made by a wise man. HOWEVER, there is a difference if one chants the daimoku while acting against the intent of this sutra".

"In the same way, the renegade disciples say, “Though the priest Nichiren is our teacher, he is too forceful. We will spread the Lotus Sutra in a more peaceful way.” In so asserting, they are being as ridiculous as fireflies laughing at the sun and moon, an anthill belittling Mount Hua, wells and brooks despising the river and the ocean, or a magpie mocking a phoenix. Namu-myoho-renge-kyo." -Letter from Sado

Soka Gakkai leaders and Nichiren Shoshu priests and believers are renegade disciples and

"The Jikaku and Chishō factions war with each other incessantly; the latter-day followers of Kōbō in the head temple on Mount Kōya and those of Shōgaku-bō in Dembō-in [on Mount Negoro], Mount Hiei and Onjō-ji temple, wrangle back and forth like asura demons, fight like so many monkeys and dogs."

Likewise the SGI and Nichiren Shoshu.

“They entirely look up to groups of icchantikas and rely on them as leaders and, reverencing slanderers against the Dharma, make them national teachers (ie: Ikeda). Taking up the Classic Filial Piety of Confucius, they beat their parents’ heads and, while CHANTING the LOTUS SUTRA of Lord Shakya with their mouths, THEY GO AGAINST the MASTER OF TEACHINGS.”

Nichiren, quoting Dengyo states, “Although they praise the Hokkekyo, on the contrary, they kill the heart of the Hokke.”

Thanks for your observations. Nichiren teaches, "Many such examples of slander are also found among Nichiren’s disciples and lay believers."

“They entirely look up to groups of icchantikas and rely on them as leaders and, reverencing slanderers against the Dharma, make them national teachers. Taking up the Classic Filial Piety of Confucius, they beat their parents’ heads and, while chanting the Lotus Sutra of Lord Shakya with their mouths, they go against the Master of teachings.”

and

"For persons of the Tendai Lotus school to chant Namu-myoho-renge-kyo themselves and yet give their approval when others repeat the Nembutsu would be strange enough. Yet not only do they fail to remonstrate with them, but they criticize one who does confront the Nembutsu school, which is strange indeed!"

and

"Many such examples of slander are also found among Nichiren’s disciples and lay believers."

and

"Now you should make a great vow and pray for your next life. If you are disbelieving or slander the correct teaching even in the slightest, you will certainly fall into the great citadel of the hell of incessant suffering. Suppose there is a ship that sails on the open sea. Though the ship is stoutly built, if it is flooded by a leak, those on the ship are sure to drown together. Though the embankment between rice fields is firm, if there is an ant hole in it, then surely, in the long run, it will not remain full of water. Bail the seawater of slander and disbelief out of the ship of your life, and solidify the embankments of your faith. If a believer’s offense is slight, overlook it, and lead that person to obtain benefits. If it is serious, encourage him to strengthen his faith so that he can expiate the sin."

and

"In the same way, the renegade disciples say, “Though the priest Nichiren is our teacher, he is too forceful. We will spread the Lotus Sutra in a more peaceful way.” In so asserting, they are being as ridiculous as fireflies laughing at the sun and moon, an anthill belittling Mount Hua, wells and brooks despising the river and the ocean, or a magpie mocking a phoenix. Namu-myoho-renge-kyo."

and

"Daigaku and Uemon no Tayū had their prayers answered because they followed my advice. Hakiri seems to believe my teachings, but he ignored my suggestions about his lawsuit, and so I have been concerned about its progress. Some good seems to have come of it, perhaps because I warned him that he would lose unless he followed my advice. But because he did not listen to the extent I had hoped, the outcome has been less fruitful than he expected.

If lay believers and their teacher pray with differing minds, their prayers will be as futile as trying to kindle a fire on water. Even if they pray with one mind, their prayers will go unanswered if they have long made the error of attacking greater teachings with lesser ones. Eventually, both lay believers and their teacher will be ruined."

and

“If there are those who possess differing ideas concerning the three treasures, then truly you should know that these people can no longer hope to take refuge in, or rely upon, the three pure treasures. They will never gain benefit from any of the precepts, and in the end, they will fail to obtain the fruits of the voice-hearer, the cause-awakened one, or the bodhisattva.”

and

"In that age there will be evil monks who will steal this sutra and divide it into many parts, losing the color, scent, and flavor of the correct teaching that it contains. These evil men will read and recite this sutra, but they will ignore and put aside the profound and vital principles that the Thus Come One has expounded in it and replace them with ornate rhetoric and meaningless talk. They will tear off the first part of the sutra and stick it on at the end, tear off the end and put it at the beginning, put the end and the beginning in the middle and the middle at the beginning or the end. You must understand that these evil monks are the companions of the devil.”

Therefore, it is not difficult to understand that without a correct faith how one may develop a resistance to Nichiren's exemplary practice.

"Among my disciples, those who think themselves well versed in Buddhism are the ones who make errors. Namu-myoho-renge-kyo is the heart of the Lotus Sutra. It is like the soul of a person. To revere another teaching as its equal is to be like a consort who is married to two emperors, or who secretly commits adultery with a minister or a humble subject. It can only be a cause for disaster

and

"Now I, Nichiren, understand these things because of what I myself have undergone. But even if there are those among my disciples who understand them, they fear the accusations of the times; believing that their lives, which are as frail as dew, are in fact to be relied upon, they backslide, keep their beliefs hidden in their hearts, or behave in other such ways."

and

"But if any of Nichiren’s disciples disrupt the unity of many in body but one in mind, they would be like warriors who destroy their own castle from within."

and

"However, there is a difference if one chants the daimoku while acting against the intent of this sutra."

and

"Take these teachings to heart, and always remember that believers in the Lotus Sutra should absolutely be the last to abuse one another. All those who keep faith in the Lotus Sutra are most certainly Buddhas, and one who slanders a Buddha commits a grave offense."

and

"In the first five hundred years of the Former Day of the Law following the Buddha’s passing, only Hinayana teachings spread, while in the next five hundred years, provisional Mahayana teachings spread. The thousand years of the Middle Day of the Law saw the rise of the theoretical teaching. In the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law, only the essential teaching spreads, but even so, the theoretical teaching should not be discarded. Nowhere in the entire Lotus Sutra do we find a passage suggesting that we should discard the first fourteen chapters, which comprise the theoretical teaching. When we distinguish between the theoretical and the essential teachings on the basis of the threefold classification of the entire body of the Buddha’s teachings, the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings were to be spread in the Former Day, and the theoretical teaching, in the Middle Day, but the Latter Day is the time to propagate the essential teaching. In the present period the essential teaching is primary, while the theoretical teaching is subordinate. But those who therefore discard the latter, saying it is not the way to enlightenment, and believe only in the former, have not yet understood the doctrine of Nichiren’s true intention. Theirs is a completely distorted view.

This doctrine concerning the theoretical and essential teachings is not my own [but was expounded by the Buddha]. Those who would distort it can only be possessed by the heavenly devil, or Pāpīyas, and will topple others along with themselves into the great citadel of the hell of incessant suffering. How foolish they are! Teach this doctrine to others clearly as I have taught you these many years. Those who call themselves my disciples and practice the Lotus Sutra should all practice as I do. If they do, Shakyamuni, Many Treasures, Shakyamuni’s emanations throughout the ten directions, and the ten demon daughters will protect them. Yet, for all that, [some people associated with Ōta Jōmyō distort the teaching]. I cannot fathom what could be in their minds."

  1. “ what about-ism”
your default strategy reveals you are not able to address the teachings applied to the realities of different views held by those who recite Myoho Renge Kyo, yourself included !
no matter how feverently you implore daimoku believers to turn on Ikeda or even each other, there will be strong resistance exerted by those of us who uphold the daimoku that, BTW, establishes our equality and potential to transcend differences.
your failure to ignite the dissolution of SGI has nothing to do with your often times incendiary rhetoric, but is simply actual proof of the supremacy of the Law over persons.
you choose to employ divisiveness and personal attacks while we grapple with the modern day challenges of creating peace and prosperity in a diverse, multicultural society. we stand for progress and inclusiveness, you have no platform but destruction and airing grievances against everything you are against. You are no match for the power of unity based on daimoku and are therefore no real threat- except to your “ castle within” that you are destroying.

  2. precisely , the essential teaching, Myoho Renge kyo is believed and propagated by many Nichiren sects.
therein lies the difference between those Nichiren admonished in medieval Japan and those Mark attacks today.
apparently, mark cannot appreciate the difference and carelessly attacks fellow believers -who, quite without him, are transcending differences and are responding with strong faith during this moment of national crisis and sorrow in America.
you are no example for youth today, rogow, not a single one of your admonitions against us inspires or motivates youth who are strongly adverse to authoritarian preaching of arcane and irrelevant ideologies. they know the power of the Law. they know you are powerless against it.
some day, just confront all you don’t know, like the hearts and minds of others , and then you will fully realize why you are pitied and ignored.

That would be, Nichiren. A cherry you toss from your basket!
And this teaching directly describes you.

Following Nichiren, I share the reason I will not visit this creepy site again.

  5. WTF? Sorting people into categories...?
Holy moly, Batman, you went straight off the rails categorizing those of us who chant daimoku, but why not?
You've been sorting people and groups and races, religions and countries...blah blah blah into your "Like" and "dislike" categories for years. Doesn't pass the smell test, bro.

    Hey! Yo!
    Word up to you, boss:
This threefold world is Shakyamuni's domain and we're ALL His children, not yours to sort!

You like "just the facts, mam"
    Well there you have it!

  6. c'mom doc-- open wide and swallow, hold your nose if you have to:

"Take these teachings to heart, and always remember that believers in the Lotus Sutra should absolutely be the last to abuse one another. All those who keep faith in the Lotus Sutra are most certainly Buddhas, and one who slanders a Buddha commits a grave offense."

Now maybe you can finally understand this pill that you love to take:
"However, there is a difference if one chants the daimoku while acting against the intent of this sutra."

Both are for individual believers to take to heart: the first is a warning; the second is for self reflection re: prayers not answered, or answers not appreciated.

Make it simple for you, sir Mark; Nichiren wrote TO individual believers, to be shared and discussed amongst believers, simply put: the Gosho is NOT a "Bible" to thump and indict other believers with!!
