Bizarre SGI "Buddhist" practices

An SGI member admits to reciting Buddhist scripture in front of a picture of Ikeda:

"Steve, i would like to get a little explanation of how reciting the Kaimoku-Sho in front of a picture of Pres. Ikeda is supposed to equal the belief that he is the true Buddha or a reincarnation of Nichiren?"

He would have us believe that reciting the Kaimoku Sho to a picture of Ikeda is a mere affirmation of comaraderie. Then, the same member, when asked about the memorization of the poem To Our Young American Friends, all few hundred lines, stated, "This is nothing more than another of the myriad Buddhist practices of the Lotus Sutra."

Is this SGI practice equal to memorizing the 16th Chapter of the Lotus Sutra in English as well as Sino-Japanese?
