"Nowhere in all the five thousand or seven thousand volumes of sutras listed in the Kai-yuan era catalogue do we find a single scriptural passage that expresses disapproval of the Lotus Sutra and advises one to discard it or to cast it aside, nor any passage that says it is to be classified among the incorrect passages or abandoned. [If you disagree] you had better find some reliable passage from the sutras [that will support your view], so that you may rescue Shantao and Honen from their torments in the hell of incessant sufferings"

ReplyDeleteAmong my disciples, those who think themselves well versed in Buddhism are the ones who make errors. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the heart of the Lotus Sutra. It is like the soul of a person. To revere another teaching as its equal is to be like a consort who is married to two emperors, or who secretly commits adultery with a minister or a humble subject. It can only be a cause for disaster.
This teaching was not propagated in the Former or Middle Day of the Law because the other sutras had not yet lost their power of benefit.
Now, in the Latter Day of the Law, neither the Lotus Sutra nor the other sutras lead to enlightenment.
Only Nam-myoho-renge-kyo can do so.
This is not my own judgment. Shakyamuni, Many Treasures, the Buddhas of the ten directions, and the bodhisattvas who emerged from the earth as numerous as the dust particles of a thousand worlds have so determined it.
To mix other practices with this Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is a grave error.
A lantern is useless when the sun rises. How can dewdrops be beneficial when the rain falls? Should one feed a newborn baby anything other than its mother’s milk? No addition of other medicines is needed with a good medicine.
Somehow this woman remained true to this principle, and continued to uphold her faith until the last moment of her life. How admirable, how worthy!

No wonder practitioners fail to gain benefit!
They take the Gosho out of context in order to debase the Lotus Sutra. What this does to their believers, their minds of faith, and to the teachings, is unpardonable.
The One Great Secret Law is Namu Myoho renge kyo. This is the teachings of Soka Gakkai, the Nichiren Shu, the Honmon Butsuryu Shu and the Kempon Hokke. The Nichiren Shoshu teaches that the One Great Secret Law is the DaiGohonzon. I will leave aside for the moment who is correct about the One Great Secret Law. Every last Nichiren Buddhist, from the newest member to the most experienced knows that there is no practice in the Latter Day other than chanting Namu Myoho renge kyo. SGI's oft repeated argument implying that the Nichiren Shu, the Honmon Butsuryu Shu, and the other Nichiren practitioners, neither practice nor understand the import of Namu myoho renge, is nothing but a straw man argument. It is a logical fallacy.
Lord Ueno is none other the young samurai, Nanjo Tokimitsu. This writing is from 1278 in response to offerings he received from Lord Ueno and in memory of the death of Lord Ueno's niece. Here the Daishonin is stating that Namu Myoho renge kyo is the practice for the Latter Day. We read in an earlier part of this letter [which SGI members never cite] :
Namu Myoho Renge Kyo includes all that you and everyone else including me can and can't imagine!

On the one hand we see that repudiating the Lotus Sutra is a cause for falling into hell and on the other hand we read that, "neither the Lotus Sutra nor the other sutras lead to enlightenment". How does one resolve this seeming paradox? Nichiren Daishonin writes in the True Object of Worship (Kanjin No Honzon Sho):
"Answer: This is a matter that is difficult to believe and difficult to understand. T’ien-t’ai defined two points that are “difficult to believe and difficult to understand.” One lies in the realm of doctrinal teachings and the other in the realm of meditative practice. With regard to the former, in the sutras preached before the Lotus Sutra we read that persons of the two vehicles and icchantikas, or persons of incorrigible disbelief, are forever barred from attaining Buddhahood, and that Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, attained enlightenment for the first time in this world. Nevertheless, we find that the theoretical and the essential teachings of the Lotus Sutra repudiate both these statements. One Buddha who says two things as opposite as fire and water— who could believe him? This is the point that is “difficult to believe and difficult to understand” in the realm of doctrinal teachings.

Thus we see that Nanjo Tokimitsu was confused by the Tientai practice of the Lotus Sutra that was prevalent in Nichiren Daishonin's day, the practice of Great Concentration and Insight. The Lotus Sutra is practiced differently according to the time. Here Nichiren is talking about Tientai's Lotus Sutra teachings and practice. The Lotus Sutra itself must never be disparaged, contrary to the slanderous Soka Gakkai/Nichiren Shoshu/Noel teachings. Disparaging the Lotus Sutra is why their members fail to gain the merits and virtues of the Lotus Sutra and Shakyamuni Buddha, and why their teachings lead people into the Lower Three Worlds.
One can not read the entirety of the writings, especially the Five Major Writings, and perceive that Nichiren Daishonin disparaged the Lotus Sutra. Soka Gakkai practitioners or anyone who asserts that FAITH in Lotus Sutra is meaningless, are evil people, according to Nichiren Daishonin.
Actually, Nichiren makes more than 6000 references to the Lotus Sutra.

Although Amida, Medicine Master, and other Buddhas are sovereigns to us living beings, they are neither parents nor teachers. Shakyamuni is the only Buddha endowed with all three virtues and to whom we owe a profound debt of gratitude. There are parents and parents, yet none of them can equal Shakyamuni Buddha. There are all manner of teachers and sovereigns, but none as admirable as he is. Could those who disobey the teaching of this parent, teacher, and sovereign possibly not be abandoned by the heavenly gods and the earthly deities? They are the most unfilial of all children. It is for this reason that the Buddha said, “Though I teach and instruct them, they do not believe or accept my teachings.” Even if they follow the sutras preached before the Lotus and practice them for a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, or a million kalpas, if they do not believe in the Lotus Sutra AND chant Namu-myoho-renge-kyo even once, they will be unfilial. They will therefore be abandoned by the sacred ones7 of the three existences and the ten directions, and hated by both the heavenly gods and the earthly deities. "I expounded this principle a long time ago, so it should not be new to you. One of the six stages of practice in the perfect teaching is the stage of perception and action. At this stage “one acts as one speaks and speaks as one acts.”4 Those at the stage of being a Buddha in theory only and at the stage of hearing the name and words of the truth believe in the perfect teaching; but even though they praise it, their actions fail to reflect their words. For example, countless people study the non-Buddhist works known as the Three Records and the Five Canons, but not even one case in ten million is found where a person governs society and behaves as the texts teach. Thus it is very difficult to establish peace in society. One may be letter-perfect in reciting the Lotus Sutra, but it is far more difficult to act as it teaches. The “Simile and Parable” chapter states, “If this person... on seeing those who read, recite, copy, and uphold this sutra, should despise, hate, envy, or bear grudges against them...” The “Teacher of the Law” chapter reads, “Since hatred and jealousy toward this sutra abound even when the Thus Come One is in the world, how much more will this be so after his passing?” The “Encouraging Devotion” chapter reads, “Many ignorant people will attack us with swords and staves... again and again we will be banished.” The “Peaceful Practices” chapter states, “It [the Lotus Sutra] will face much hostility in the world and be difficult to believe.” Although these quotations from the sutra are the Buddha’s prophecies, there is no reference to when these persecutions will occur. But setting aside the two thousand years of the Former and Middle Days of the Law, now, in the Latter Day, in all Japan only Nichiren seems to be doing so. The old testament is an integral part of the New testament. Jesus was always quoting the old testament and bought out revelations from it in a similiar way that Nichiren does with the Lotus Sutra. Hey, I am Andre leite da Silva and we have been talking in the comment section, about Daimoku ! I have been chanting now for 90 days with no result,and i would like to ask you a few questions.
ReplyDeleteIn our first interaction you said that at the end of the deadlines that I established if I had not received any benefit, result or proof of the power of daimoku I could give up in peace (you even said that I had so much confidence that I would also give up if nothing happened, something which I found very impressive!)! I've been practicing for 90 days and nothing happened! (I don't feel anything during or after the practice)
How should I interpret if at the end of the 100 days (deadline I set at the beginning of the challenge to test the power of DAimoku) nothing has happened? There are only10 days left and I don't see how I will receive a concrete result,proof do Daimoku's power or concrete benefit, nor do I know what to expect from the practice! I didn't start the DAimoku practice to have results in another life, with all due respect! (I had clear and objective goals and the hope of at least receiving proof of DAimoku's power or signal)
I don't know how to have faith in something that hasn't worked for me, nor do I know what to expect. I dont know how i will motivate myself to keep chanting everyday, if at the end of the deadline, nothing happened. How can i trust something that don't work? For how long will i have to chant, with no benefit, result or proof?

I chant 15 -20 minutes 2 times a day, every day! I will continue to chant until the end of the deadline! But what should i do if nothing happens? How show i understand my lack f results? How long should i chant until i can be sure that Daimoku doesn't work for me?(I am not saying that if nothing happens until day 100 i will give up, bu i can keep chanting everyday if nothing happens)

On Persecutions Befalling the Sage:
Each of you should summon up the courage of a lion king and never succumb to threats from anyone. The lion king fears no other beast, nor do its cubs. Slanderers are like barking foxes, but Nichiren’s followers are like roaring lions. The lay priest of Saimy?-ji, now deceased, and the present ruler permitted my return from my exiles when they found that I was innocent of the accusations against me. The present ruler shall no longer take action on any charge without confirming its truth. You may rest assured that nothing, not even a person possessed by a powerful demon, can harm Nichiren, because Brahm?, Shakra, the gods of the sun and moon, the four heavenly kings, the Sun Goddess, and Hachiman are safeguarding him.
Strengthen your faith day by day and month after month. Should you slacken in your resolve even a bit, devils will take advantage.
We common mortals are so foolish that we do not fear either the warnings in the sutras and treatises, or those things that seem somewhat removed from us. When Hei no Saemon and Akitaj?-no-suke, in their anger, wreak havoc upon us, you must demonstrate a firm resolve. Men are now being sent to Tsukushi [to fight the Mongols]; consider yourselves in the same position as those who are on their way or are already at the fortifications. So far our believers have not experienced sorrows of that sort. The warriors in Tsukushi, however, now face a dreadful fate, and if they are killed in battle, they are doomed to fall into hell.
Although at present we are encountering the severe trials of persecution, in our next life we will become Buddhas.
Our present tribulations are like moxibustion; at the time, it is painful, but because it has beneficial aftereffects, the pain is not really pain.
Urge on, but do not frighten, the ones from Atsuhara who are ignorant of Buddhism.
Tell them to be prepared for the worst, and not to expect good times, but take the bad times for granted.
If they complain of hunger, tell them about the sufferings of the world of hungry spirits. If they grumble that they are cold, tell them of the eight cold hells. If they say they are frightened, explain to them that a pheasant sighted by a hawk, or a mouse stalked by a cat, is as desperate as they are. I have been repeating these things in detail day after day, month after month, year after year. Yet with the lay nun of Nagoe, Sh?-b?, Noto-b?, Sammi-b?, and the like, who are cowardly, unreasoning, greedy, and doubting, my words have no more effect than pouring water on lacquer ware or slicing through air."

You might try and master Gongyo along with your Daimoku. You know Andre, you can't put a fish on the altar and expect it to cook. Daimoku and action is necessary. Faith, of which you have none, is first and foremost.

I feel cheated. I was even invited by you to believe in something that did not generate any results and now I am told I cannot set a deadline? Hi Andre. I don't know what to say. I'm not Soka Gakkai so specific goals are not my thing. I have faith in the Gohonzon, Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha, and Nichiren Daishonin. Attachments are bad and they are not an integral part of Buddhism. Lets say one is attached to a girlfriend and finds another man. If you are not attached to the woman, you go out and find another. Bad things happen to good people and although you haven't met your goals, nothing bad has happened to you, correct? Then, from my perspective, you are protected. Perhaps you were introduced to the practice by a Soka Gakkai member. If so, you were taught a lot of bull about the practice. Faith, practice, and study are the pillars of the Nichiren Lotus Sutra faith. You might try studying the Lotus Sutra and writings of Nichiren Daishonin. You might share with me your goals and I can point you to the solutions based on the Lotus Sutra and writings of Nichiren. I did promise to not chant and I did keep my promise, for one whole day I didn't chant. Anyway, keep me updayed and please tell me something about yourself.

The fact that bad things did not happen does not mean that it was Daimoku that prevented them from happening! Bad things have not happened to me, long before I started the practice of DAimoku (I never have cancer, in 32 years of life for example. Are going to tell me that my 100 days of DAimoku are responsible for my Cancer free life? Now anything bad that doesnt happens, it because of DAimoku? Where is the logic in this?)
I also do not understand how sharing my ambitions will allow you to help me, when according to VC, do you not practice for specific goals?
I will give up! None of this makes any sense! If something had to happen, it would have already happened. You are not even a Buddhist and able to explain it to me because the supreme law doesn’t work for me, and they still want me to have faith in something that doesn’t work or has a deadline to work! This is not true, this is servitude!
Hi again Andre. I knew from the very beginning that you had made goals for yourself and these were very important. What if you had a goal to become a brain surgeon? Do you think you could become a brain surgeon in 100 days? Are your goals realistic? I said for me, at this stage of my faith and practice that goals didn't mean that much to me, more a feeling of peace and security for me and mine.

I created a list of several goals, some very simple others more complicated nothing happened! So I ask you why after the deadline and today with more than 120 days of practice nothing happens? Why didn't I get an answer or proof of the supposed power of the law?
DeleteI ask you then, how long will it take for something to happen? How will I sustain the practice of Daimokue while still having faith, trust in mystical law and being optimistic, since there is not even a deadline or estimate for something, at least something to happen?

You haven't gotten Covid-19, you haven't gotten into an accident, you weren't mugged, nor did you have a slip and fall. I'd say you were protected.

I started chanting DAimoku in July 2020, Covid-19 stated much earlier and I also didn't get mugged before or had an accident long before I started doing daimoku! If I was mugged after my initiate in this practice, would you tell me that DAimoku hurt me? Of course not because it wouldn't make any sense

I also never had cancer in my life! Are you going to tell me that it was Daimoku that protected me? I've been alive for almost 32 years. Is it Daimoki that has kept me alive too?
You are lucky to have found the Daimoku if even for a short time.

As I explained to you, when I started the practice, I didn't know (and I don't know yet) what I could establish or not as an objective. So I created a list with several goals, from professionals (how to find a better job, in an area that I like and that is competent) to personal goals.
Although I was unable to manifest any of my goals, why didn't you receive at least proof of Daimoku's power? Would it be too much to receive a proof? How will I develop my faith if there is no proof that my prayers are not being wasted in something that either DAimoku can help it ot that would take much more time.
Could you at least, after 40 years of practice, explain to me why nothing happens? Why after so much time i cant feel like i am doing something that will works, eventually. I Dont even know for how long i should continue with daimoku, until something, i mean, anything happens!

Hi Andre. Been away for a couple of days. Sorry for a delayed response. If you continue to chant the Daimoku, I will send you a Gohonzon. Set up an altar and I will send you a Gohonzon. No money involved. Just promise to protect it and if you decide to stop chanting, please send it back. How about for 50 years?
