I believe it is the Daishonin's teaching to be magnanimous and through friendship let non-Buddhists discover the greatness of True Mahayana Buddhism. But the Lotus Sutra teaches through the practice of Shakubuku:
“Good men, [the Thus Come One observes how among living beings there are] those who delight in lesser teachings, meager in virtue and heavy with defilement.” -- Lotus Sutra
