"Saichō, who founded the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism, reduced the number of vinaya code to 66. (Enkai 円戒) During the 12th century, a number of monks from Tendai sects founded new schools (Zen, Pure Land) and de-emphasised vegetarianism, Nichiren Buddhism today likewise de-emphasises vegetarianism. However, Nichiren himself practiced vegetarianism." Wiki
I have noticed in the beginnings of the Gosho's Nichiren gives gratitude to those for what they have offered , I haven't noticed meat on the list, but think I noticed some Saki.
He also speaks very fondly of all living creatures except of those Government and Religious Officials that slander the Law . Nichiren died when was 60, he had a really hard life when we consider what he had to endure during the extreme conditions of his exiles, I doubt that meat in his diet would of made much of a difference in prolonging his life
Vegan is the way to go when we consider the suffering that animals have to go through for our meat addiction. Just hope that we can find healthy substitutes to take in fat soluble vitamins. Because we have evolved on an omnivorous diet over tens of thousands of years our physiology may become unbalanced especially in some individuals more than others - it's a tricky business of knowing what is best
